Warning: The following contains spoilers for 100 Girlfriends, Season 2, Episode 3, "Can You See the Maid?", now streaming on Crunchyroll.

100 Girlfriends season 2, episode 3, "Can You See the Maid?" Is a wild blend of insanity and wholesomeness. The first two episodes had some weird stuff in them, but this one takes the cake and is comparable to some of the first season's craziness.

A lot of people probably watch 100 Girlfriends exclusively because of how absurd and risqué its comedy is, and if you're one of those people, this is the episode for you. From drugs that turn people into babies, to blind maids and Death Note references, this episode truly has it all.

The Baby Bit

... It Was Weird

The first sequence of the episode is the wildest one so far in season 2. Hahari, who wanted to... Relive her early maternal days (to put it politely), had Kusuri develop a drug that would turn people into babies. Long story short, an accident happens, and Hahari also turns into a baby, leaving only Hakari and Rentarou at their normal ages.

A bunch of the jokes and scenes in this part could get lesser shows canceled, but, for better or worse, 100 Girlfriends marches on. That's not to say that all the humor is NSFW though, as there's also a ton of humor with the babies putting themselves in dangerous situations and Rentarou and Hakari having to constantly keep them in line.

Hakari Grows Closer to Her Mom

While a lot of the first half of the episode is about baby humor and Hakari being down bad as usual, they actually tried to give it a positive message in the end. Early in the episode, Hakari and Hahari get into a fight because Hakari found it upsetting that her mother was behaving like a complete brat in front of them. But after taking care of the baby-fied girls, Hakari realized just how much effort it is to raise a child and learned to appreciate her mother, who was also a teenager when Hakari was born.

"No matter how you may act, you'll always be my mother. The same mother I love and respect so much." - Hakari to Hahari

Girlfriend #8: Mei Meido

Loyal, Blind, and Possibly Blindly Loyal

Following up the gourmet, Kurumi, is the maid Mei Meido as Rentarou's eighth girlfriend. Mei had a brief cameo in 100 Girlfriends season 1, episode 11, "Even If It Kills Me", and had her first proper appearance in episode 12, "The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You (94 to Go)", as one of the Hanazono family's maids. Her service to Hahari continues in this episode, where she serves Rentarou and the girls some drinks and snacks on the school rooftop.

As Rentarou and the girls were discussing each other's eye colors, Hahari brought up Mei, saying she had beautiful rainbow-colored eyes. Curious, they ask her to open her eyes and show them because, up until that point, Mei constantly had her eyes closed in the stereotypical way elegant anime characters do. It turns out that because she had gotten so used to having her eyes shut, Mei had lost the ability to open them, and so the rest of the episode is spent with the group trying to get Mei to open her eyes. The premise is so unbelievably stupid but also wildly entertaining.

Mei's Personality

As they try to pry Mei's eyes open, the episode reveals some of what makes the maid tick. Mei's character seems to revolve around her loyalty to the Hanazono family, specifically Hahari. After realizing she couldn't open her eyes, Mei suggested cutting off her eyelids just to fulfill Hahari's command. Later, she even said she'd accept using Kusuri's face-melting potion should Hahari tell her to. In fact, the only way they got Mei to open her eyes is out of disbelief that she could have possibly offended her master by laughing at a story where Hahari made a mistake.

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding Mei though. The show has yet to reveal why Mei is so loyal to the Hanazono family. The episode ends with a slight cliffhanger with Mei confessing her love for Rentarou, so the next episode should mostly be about her. Hopefully, 100 Girlfriends fills in her character a bit more with some backstory.

Like all the other girlfriends, Mei's name has a pun that helps viewers remember it more easily. But unlike the other girls, Meido's name pun is noticeable even to the non-Japanese audience because her last name, "Meido", is literally just "Maid" pronounced with a Japanese accent. Additionally, Mei's birthday is May 10th, which is also a pun, as one of the pronunciations of the Japanese number ten is "do", making her birthday "May-do", another homophone for "maid".
