The 24 Movie is in the early stages of development at 20th Century Studios and Disney. Kiefer Sutherland hasn't officially signed on to reprise the role of Jack Bauer, and plot details are shrouded in mystery. Jack Bauer is one of the most tortured characters in the history of television: he's technically died twice, suffered the loss of friends and family, been kidnapped and tortured and much more. The 24 Movie needs to figure out what is left to say about Jack Bauer if it is to be a success.

Despite featuring in over 200 episodes of 24 between 2001 and 2014, Jack Bauer's story doesn't feel like it has been completed. He's had more bad days than he can count on one hand, literally, but the ex-federal agent's ultimate fate was left ambiguous. A 24 Movie has been considered for years, but nothing ever came to fruition. However, 24 is making a return with a big screen adventure at last, and Jack might finally get the ending he deserves.

24 has had two finales that have both failed to give Jack Bauer a satisfying ending. The first 'ending' came after eight long seasons in 2010, when it was essentially canceled after becoming too expensive to make, coupled with the decrease in quality of the later seasons. The final scene sees Jack going on the run after his nihilistic killing spree of the Russians who were responsible for murdering Renee Walker.

Kiefer Sutherland first played Jack Bauer between 2001-2010 and returned in the limited series, 24: Live Another Day in 2014, but it's been over a decade since he last played the action hero.
Sutherland has been an Americana country singer since 2016, releasing three successful albums, with a fourth due out in January 2025. He regularly tours the world and has a loyal fan base.

The ex CTU agent resurfaced in 2014's limited series, 24: Live Another Day, and it appeared to be the final opportunity to wrap up Jack Bauer's story. However, the now 12 episode series ends with Jack handing himself over to the Russians, leaving his story un-completed in the eyes of many fans. It's now been over a decade since Jack Bauer last appeared on screens, and it was looking like his story would never be completed satisfyingly. The announcement back in July 2024 that a big screen version of 24 was in the works was welcomed by many fans who want to see Jack Bauer's story end properly.

It could be argued that Jack Bauer did find his peace at the end of 24: Live Another Day, as he no longer had to fight anymore and accepted his fate in Russian captivity. However, that wasn't the ending many fans deserved or wanted. Jack has always succeeded in saving the world only to suffer personal consequences for his actions at the end of most seasons of 24. It was hoped Jack might finally get the happy ending he deserved when the series finally came to an end over a decade ago. That wasn't to be, and the upcoming 24 Movie will potentially continue his story, if Kiefer Sutherland signs on.

Jack Bauer will likely face a global threat to bring him back into action in the 24 Movie, but after he's completed his mission, he deserves peace. If the 24 Movie is a success, and it becomes a franchise, they could still end Jack's story satisfyingly, albeit delaying it for a couple of movies. It'll be interesting to see how successful the movie version is, with lots of potential issues to solve with the real-time aspect that was so crucial to the success of the original series.
