  • LinkedIn post reveals upcoming Mafia and BioShock titles, alongside unannounced remake.
  • 2K Games has not remade many titles, but Mafia: Definitive Edition sets high standards.

Recently surfaced information has revealed that an unannounced remake is currently in the works at 2K Games, one of Take-Two Interactive's publishing divisions. With the company boasting a plethora of blockbuster hits and seminal classics in its extensive library of titles, the prospect of 2K Games revisiting an older installment from one of its popular franchises and bringing it up to modern standards has the potential to excite many.

Since its establishment in 2005, 2K has managed to make a name for itself over the years as one of the more prolific publishers in the gaming industry. These days, the company is perhaps best known for its annualized sports franchises, like NBA 2K and WWE 2K. However, the publisher has several other IPs under its belt. Some of the most notable video game franchises that 2K owns include BioShock, Mafia, Borderlands, Sid Meier's Civilization, Duke Nukem, and X-COM. Additionally, the company holds the rights to a selection of lesser-known titles, like The Darkness, Top Spin, and Spec Ops: The Line. 2K's storied repertoire certainly doesn't lack variety, but many of its IPs have been dormant for quite a while.

Fortunately for fans of 2K's franchises, a recently-discovered LinkedIn post suggests that at least one of them could make a return in the near future in the form of a remake. As spotted by MP1st, a 3D artist and mo-cap animator at 2K Games, made a post on their LinkedIn profile that outlined the projects he's worked on since early 2022. Among the titles listed in the portfolio were the upcoming Mafia game from Hanger 13 and the next BioShock title from Cloud Chamber, in addition to an unannounced sports game and a canceled Supermassive Games project under the codename "Erebus." Most notably, though, the now-deleted LinkedIn page also mentioned an "upcoming unannounced remake," though it stopped short of providing any substantial details.

An Unannounced Remake is in Development at 2K Games

What this project could be is anyone's guess, but perhaps it might turn out to be a remake of one of the most beloved FPS games of all time, the original BioShock. Since it was released all the way back in 2007, a proper reimagining of the acclaimed shooter with current-gen graphics would make a lot of sense. It's also possible, however, that a game like Borderlands 1, Duke Nukem 3D, or Civilization 5 is being rebuilt for modern platforms instead. Regardless of what it may be, it seems likely that one of 2K's legacy titles will be brought back at some point.

Compared to other publishers like Sony and Capcom, 2K hasn't remade that many of its games. The last time the company rebuilt one of its titles from the ground up was with the critically acclaimed Mafia: Definitive Edition, a remake that lived up to the hype against all odds. Hopefully, 2K Games' next remake will follow in Mafia: DE's footsteps by staying faithful to its source material without sacrificing modern standards when it comes to gameplay and visuals.
