How To Craft An Auger
An Auger is typically a late-game tool. However, there are some things that you can do to quickly unlock the ability to craft it. To craft a tier 1 Auger, you'll need to read a total of 61 Tools Digest magazines. Most skills in the game are tied to a magazine set. So, if you invest in specific skills, then you will increase the likelihood of finding specific magazines. To increase the odds of finding Tools Digest magazines, invest at least one point into Miner 69'r.
When it comes to finding magazines, you'll want to loot mailboxes, bookshelves, and newspaper stands. Mailboxes are found outside most POIs. Bookshelves can be found inside most homes. However, you'll find lots of bookshelves in Crack-A-Book stores. As for newspaper stands, these are typically only found in built-up areas. If you come across a large town, then it's worth taking a look around for mailboxes and newspaper stands.
You'll also find magazines in various loot containers. But some loot containers have a higher chance of containing Tools Digest magazines. Construction boxes, Working Stiff Crates, and any other container that is located within the bounds of Working Stiff Tools POIs and construction sites.
Once you've gathered enough magazines, you'll be able to craft an Auger. Keep in mind that you'll need to craft a Workbench as the Auger can not be crafted by hand. The material cost and magazine requirements for each Auger tier can be seen in the table below:

The higher the Auger's tier, the better its overall performance. But even a tier 1 Auger can do a great job of collecting lots of resources quickly. The only real drawbacks are the fact that it can eat through gas, and it needs repairing quite often.
Purchasing An Auger
As you progress through the game, your loot stage and game stage will increase. Trader inventories are based on a combination of your game stage, loot stage, and level. The higher those numbers, the better quality items a trader will stock. While any trader has the chance of selling an Auger, Trader Bob is the vehicle and tools specialist, so he has an increased chance of having one for sale.
It's important to note that an Auger isn't cheap. If you do find one for sale, make sure that you have plenty of Dukes on hand if you are considering buying one. Finding An Auger
If you are lucky, then you can find an Auger while looting. While technically, an Auger can spawn inside almost any loot container, you have the best odds of finding one inside a container that is centered around building and tool making. That said, it's virtually impossible to find one of these early on in a playthrough.
Increasing your loot stage will help increase the chances of you finding an Auger inside a loot container. Your loot stage will naturally go up as you play. However, there are a couple of things that you can do to further increase your loot stage. The best ways of increasing your loot stage can be seen below:
- Skill: Lucky Looter - Loot Bonus Between 5% and 25% Depending On The Level
- Armor Piece: Rogue Hood: Loot Bonus Between 2% and 20%
- Eye Candy: +5 Loot Bonus, +10% Loot Bonus for 6 Minutes
- Biome Boost: Each Biome, Aside From The Pine Forest, Gives You A Temporary Loot Stage Boost
For the best chance, try to find a Working Stiff Tools store in the Wasteland. Also, provided you have the ammo, take down Zombie Bears and Dire Wolves as they have a 100% chance of dropping a red loot bag. These bags are among the best loot containers in the game.
Auger Mods
Just like all of the other tools in the game, the Auger can be modified to make it more efficient. Most mods in the game can only be crafted after you've read their schematic. However, you can also find the mods in loot containers, purchase them from traders, or even receive them as rewards for completing trader missions. The mods that can be placed on the Auger can be seen below:
- Bunker Buster: 25% More Damage Against Stone
- Deal 25% More Damage To Blocks But 25% Less Damage To Enemies
- Fortifying Grip: When Health Is Below 50%, Gain 1 Hit Point Every 5 Seconds
- Grave Digger: 25% More Damage Against Dirt
- Rad Remover: Disables The Regeneration Ability Of Radiated Zombies For 90 Seconds
- Structural Brace: Lowers Tool Degradation By 25%
- Iron Breaker: 15% More Damage Against Iron
- Motor Tool Large Tank: Increases Tank Size By 100% For Chainsaws And Augers
- Motor Tool Small Tank: Increases Tank Size By 50% For Chainsaws And Augers

Out of the aforementioned mods, the ones that are worth investing in are the Iron Breaker, Grave Digger, Diamond Blade Tip, and Bunker Buster. The Motor Tool Large Tank can also be pretty good, but it isn't always necessary.
Is An Auger Worth Using?
While it does require gas to run, the Auger is perfect for getting lots of materials at record speed. You will need to keep plenty of Repair Kits on hand, as this type of tool tends to break relatively often. The Auger does make a lot of noise, which can attract nearby zombies. But if you crouch, then the noise is reduced by 50%. Also, pressing the button to activate the Auger generates heat. However, if you don't let go of the trigger, then your heat output will remain relatively low, reducing the chance of spawning a Screamer. The Auger isn't good against zombies, but when it comes to mining, it's hard to beat.
