Activision, the company behind the long-running Call of Duty franchise, doesn't seem to be worried in the face of Battlefield 6 and all the hype that's been surrounding it. Battlefield 6 just recently dropped its story campaign and multiplayer reveal trailers to huge buzz and excitement across the internet, with the campaign trailer even surpassing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's cinematic reveal trailer in likes. After Battlefield 2042, it seems Battlefield 6's modern-day setting and long-requested battle royale mode are just what FPS fans have been wanting.
Call of Duty is still in a steady place at the moment. Its Black Ops 6 campaign was much better received than some of the franchise's recent single-player story offerings, and its multiplayer and Zombies suites are still alive and well with Season 5 kicking off today. With that said, its battle royale mode, Call of Duty: Warzone, has seen significant player drops over the past several months. Between all of Call of Duty's offerings, its Warzone battle royale suite seems the most vulnerable and susceptible to harsher drops resulting from Battlefield 6's potential success.
It May Not Look Like It, But Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Are Fighting Over the Same Territory
This year's new CoD title, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, will be going head-to-head with the next Battlefield game in the coming months.
Activision Thinks Call of Duty is 'Too Big To Fail'
It seems that, despite this, Activision isn't at all shaken about Battlefield 6 coming in to make huge waves this Fall. According to Insider Gaming, sources close to the Call of Duty publisher have expressed that Activision isn't too concerned about the fierce competition Battlefield 6 seems poised to bring to Call of Duty's success, adding that higher-up at Activision are dubbing Call of Duty "too big to fail."
Despite bringing the first traditional story campaign to the series since Battlefield Hardline in 2015, Battlefield 6 likely won't do much harm to Call of Duty's future annual output of titles that offer campaign, multiplayer, and co-op modes, especially since Battlefield itself is not likely to become annualized any time soon, if ever. With that said, the real competition will likely come from Battlefield 6's battle royale mode, which could give Call of Duty: Warzone some seriously dangerous competition if executed and supported well. A Battlefield battle royale has been a hotly requested experience in the online FPS space for a while, and now that it's coming, Warzone will have even more direct competition than games like Fortnite and Apex Legends.
Thousands of FPS fans are already queuing up for Battlefield 6's open beta, which is set to begin on Saturday, August 9. The game's full release has also recently been confirmed for October 10. As for Call of Duty, Black Ops 7 rumors land it in mid-November, though these are unconfirmed. It's possible that the game's release date could be revealed during the game's larger unveiling at Gamescom's Opening Night Live show later this month.
