When plans were put together for Happy Gilmore 2, Weathers was still alive and looking forward to the iconic comedy being revived. Unfortunately, his death occurred before the movie was filmed, which necessitated some major storyline changes from what had initially been planned for the movie. Sandler opened up to Collider about the alterations that were made, which turned out to be more significant than people initially imagined.

“We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away. We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change.”

The original plans for Happy Gilmore 2 never made it to the final draft, which is a shame. However, the initial version was going to feature Peterson appearing frequently throughout the movie via Happy’s dreams, where he would have still been able to impact the unconventional golfer’s life. That was also going to set up an emotional storyline for Peterson’s son, who was going to be made at Happy for causing his father’s death, which would have then played out throughout the rest of the movie. Whether any of the latter aspects were kept in Happy Gilmore 2 remains to be seen, but the majority of that idea obviously had to be scrapped. Therefore, Happy Gilmore 2 is going to be vastly different from the original idea, proving just how important Weathers was to this project.

However, fans of the film and the role of Peterson can expect Happy Gilmore 2 to be filled with references to Weathers’ iconic character, which will be pleasing to fans, given the importance he held in the original movie. Chubbs was essentially the heart of Happy Gilmore, helping to guide the titular character and being one of the only people who saw something in him from the beginning. That is why the long-awaited sequel will feature numerous tributes to him, ensuring that his spirit is felt throughout the movie, even if Weathers isn’t physically present.

Despite that, Happy Gilmore 2 will feature a plethora of characters from the original movie, with the likes of Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and Ben Stiller all reprising their roles. However, they will also be joined by a host of new characters, including the likes of Travis Kelce and legendary golf star Rory McIlroy. Meanwhile, there is going to be a new generation of Gilmore’s shown throughout this movie that will allow the franchise to continue on if that decision is made. However, the main message that Sandler has conveyed is that Happy Gilmore 2 will still be released, featuring Chubbs Peterson, whether he’s physically present or not.
