Adolescence’s Owen Cooper Emmy Nomination Makes History

adolescence

As reported by Movie Web, Adolescence's Owen Cooper, who played the 13-year-old schoolboy Jamie Miller, has been nominated for an Emmy in the 'Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie' category, which is an incredible feat, especially since this will be the first time a young actor has been nominated for this award since 16-year-old Scott Jacoby took home the prize in 1972 for his role in That Certain Summer.

Directed by Lamont Johnson, who was nominated for nine Emmy Awards, winning twice, for Wallenberg: A Hero's Story and Lincoln (1988) — both for Outstanding Directing For A Miniseries Movie Or A Dramatic Special, That Certain Summer tells the story of teenager Nick (Scott Jacoby) and his struggles with finding out that his father is in a relationship with another man, Gary (played by Martin Sheen), since his parents' divorce. Even though the film didn't get that much recognition at the time, it went on to become an important pillar in queer representation. In 2014, The Paley Center For Media added the movie to its media collection in celebration of television's impact on LGBT equality.

It's certainly no surprise that Owen Cooper has been nominated for an Emmy in this category, as his portrayal of Jamie was incredibly profound, especially when up against greats like Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty. One of Cooper's best scenes came in episode 4 of Adolescence, where the young boy was being interviewed by a psychologist, played by Erin Doherty, who is compiling a report about him for a judge after being accused of murdering high school student Katie. Throughout the episode, Owen’s chilling and unnerving performance, mixed with charm and anger, solidified Cooper's undoubtedly successful future in the industry.

Adolescence is streaming right now on Netflix.
