Xbox console exclusive Age of Empires 4 is coming to PlayStation 5, with a release date set for November 4, 2025. The announcement sees Age of Empires 4 become the latest console exclusive to make the jump between the two platforms.

In recent years, it feels as though the barriers between consoles have been broken down. It's not entirely there yet, but there has undoubtedly been a softening of both Microsoft and Sony's positions in this regard. On August 26, Helldivers 2 will head to Xbox Series X/S, and Gears of War: Reloaded will launch on PlayStation 5. Even just a few years ago, the idea of a Gears of War game on PlayStation was unthinkable, and is arguably a sign of the times when it comes to the future of console exclusives. Remember, Age of Empires 4 is published by Xbox Game Studios, too.

Age of Empires 4 is Headed to PlayStation 5 in November

The announcement of Age of Empires 4 coming to PlayStation 5 took place at Gamescom 2025, with confirmation that it's arriving on November 4. This comes just over four years after the game's initial launch, but better late than never. Earlier this year, PlayStation gamers also got Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition six years after its release, in what proved to be a warm-up act before the main event.

That's not all. Alongside the PlayStation 5 announcement, a new expansion for the game was announced named Age of Empires 4: Dynasties of the East. Headlining the update are new Age of Empires Variant Civilizations, as well as The Crucible, "a brand-new single player rogue-lite mode." Age of Empires 4: Dynasties of the East will launch on November 4 for all platforms - the same day as the PlayStation 5 release.

While Age of Empires 4 continues to receive new content, there may be more to come from the franchise in the future. Last year, a rumor emerged that future Age of Empire games may jump to Unreal Engine 5, but nothing has come to fruition in this regard. Given the massive 16-year gap between Age of Empires 3 and 4, fans likely shouldn't expect an announcement on a sequel any time soon.
