From the moment The Game Awards 2023's nominees were first announced, Alan Wake 2 immediately became the show's underdog. With the fight for the top Game of the Year spot arguably already taken by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur's Gate 3, many Alan Wake 2 fans looked to the rest of its nominated categories for hope, and thankfully, there were a surprising number of nominations for Remedy's long-awaited survival horror sequel.

From Best Game Direction to Best Narrative to Best Score and Music and a few others in between, Alan Wake 2 was nominated for a total of eight highly prestigious Game Awards. Fans knew all too well that Alan Wake 2 probably wasn't going to win Game of the Year, but when it came to the rest, it stood as good of a chance of winning as any other nominee. The Game Awards' final results mostly went down how fans expected, with Baldur's Gate 3 sweeping most categories, but one of the bigger surprises of the night was just how many awards Alan Wake 2 managed to walk away with.

Out of the eight total Game Awards categories that Alan Wake 2 was nominated in, Remedy managed to secure victory in three of those. While the actual act of winning those categories isn't surprising, with Alan Wake 2 being a truly exceptional video game experience, what is surprising is the sheer level of competition Alan Wake 2 managed to conquer in order to achieve these coveted awards.

Arguably, Alan Wake 2's most impressive win of the night came right toward the end of The Game Awards 2023. Going up against juggernauts like Baldur's Gate 3, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2 managed to walk away with the Best Game Direction trophy at The Game Awards 2023. Though Remedy's Sam Lake was hurried off-stage after just 30 seconds, this moment is undoubtedly a highlight of Remedy's entire history, with the studio's wholly unique shared vision being the thing that secured them this award.

Another slightly surprising win for Alan Wake 2 was the Best Narrative Game Award. Before the ceremony, many fans were convinced that this would be yet another category that Baldur's Gate 3 would sweep, with its player-led narrative being one of the RPG's biggest and best features. But Alan Wake 2's expertly-delivered dual narrative was deemed to be the better story this year, and Alan Wake 2 fans are ecstatic with the result.

The final Game Awards trophy that Alan Wake 2 managed to walk away with was the one for Best Art Direction. Another incredibly stacked category with gorgeous games like Hi-Fi Rush, Zelda, and Mario Bros. Wonder, this was an impressive win for Alan Wake 2, and definitely another deserved one. One of Alan Wake 2's most striking features is its realistic art style, featuring cutting-edge lighting effects, character and face models, and environmental textures, all of which come together to make Alan Wake 2 one of the best-looking games of all time. Pair this with Remedy's unique penchant for live-action integration, and Alan Wake 2's art direction is like no other this year.

A string of ritualistic murders threatens Bright Falls, a small-town community surrounded by Pacific Northwest wilderness. Saga Anderson, an accomplished FBI agent with a reputation for solving impossible cases arrives to investigate the murders. Anderson’s case spirals into a nightmare when she discovers pages of a horror story that starts to come true around her.

Alan Wake, a lost writer trapped in a nightmare beyond our world, writes a dark story in an attempt to shape the reality around him and escape his prison. With a dark horror hunting him, Wake is trying to retain his sanity and beat the devil at his own game.

Anderson and Wake are two heroes on two desperate journeys in two separate realities, connected at heart in ways neither of them can understand: reflecting each other, echoing each other, and affecting the worlds around them.

Fueled by the horror story, supernatural darkness invades Bright Falls, corrupting the locals and threatening the loved ones of both Anderson and Wake. Light is their weapon—and their safe haven — against the darkness they face. Trapped in a sinister horror story where there are only victims and monsters, can they break out to be the heroes they need to be?
