Summary

  • Amazon Prime is working on a RoboCop series, staying true to the original material.
  • Industry heavyweights like James Wan and Peter Ocko are leading the series.
  • The show remains secretive on plot details, or who might headline.

When Hollywood tried to bring back the RoboCop franchise in a new movie, the film largely flopped. Could a series be the way to really get this cult hero back into the mainstream consciousness? It appears that Amazon Prime Video is giving it a real go as the streaming series took another big step towards being a reality.

There has been at least some talk about reviving the beloved RoboCop IP since Amazon acquired its license as part of the MGM Studios purchase back in 2022. While there still aren’t any confirmed actors for the show, the roster of people in charge of RoboCop movies spinoff is starting to take shape and making it clear that sooner or later, the series will be reality. And it appears by the look of people being put in charge, that the IP is in good hands.

Variety recently reported this new version of the RoboCop storyline now has Peter Ocko stepping into the role of writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the currently in-development show. He’ll be teaming up with James Wan, the prolific producer and filmmaker behind franchises like Saw, The Conjuring, and Insidious, who is helping to run the project through his Atomic Monster banner.

The RoboCop Series Sticking To The Source Material

Alongside the announcement of the producers and showrunner being attached to the new RoboCop project, Variety released the official log line for the upcoming Amazon series. In the process it looks like this new show is going to stick very close to the original movie that has become such a cult hit even decades after it was first released.

"A giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine."

This particular logline obviously doesn’t shed much light in the way of what sort of villains will be present or what kind of adventures RoboCop will go on once he’s brought back to life and being transformed into a cyborg. In fact, that logline confirms only that the show is walking the same path as the original movies and not much else. Perhaps the showrunners and producers are wanting to keep as much as possible under wraps until the project moves forward and they’re ready to really unveil whatever they have up their collective sleeves.

While the attachment of James Wan might make some wonder if this version of RoboCop could have a bend towards more of a horror aspect, the fame producer has shown he’s more than willing to go towards a more traditional “hero” story when he directed Aquaman 2. Writer and showrunner Ocko has had a varied career as a writer as he’s worked on comedies like The Office, science fiction projects like Extant. Ocko’s even written for the pirate drama Black Sails. It would appear with those two attached to the project that things are only going to start speeding up for the RoboCop Amazon series, including some announcements of cast members in the very near future.
