AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 Explained

AFMF is AMD’s version of Nvidia’s Frame Generation (FG), and it works similarly by using AI to generate artificial frames that seamlessly improve the overall FPS in games, which is perfect for those with lower-tier to mid-tier GPUs but also benefits gamers trying to target higher resolutions and FPS. AFMF adds frames between two frames generated in the game. This makes the game feel smoother, which is the nature of games running at a higher frame rate. The first version of the technology showed significant improvements in games and also revealed the potential of this technology.

With AFMF 2, AMD has been able to tweak the technology and make it even better, partly because of the introduction of AI. Nvidia has been using AI for its FG tech and now AMD’s AFMF 2 also comes with AI integration. It uses AI optimizations to develop an updated algorithm that is more efficient with the frames that it inserts at different resolutions.

The AI integration also allows for two new modes called “Search Mode” and “Performance Mode”. Within these modes, the optimal settings are automatically enabled, but users can still adjust and tweak the settings as they like.

“Search Mode” focuses on “fallback,” which is when there are high-motion scenes on screen and AFMF is temporarily disabled. This can lead to jitters that impact the overall gameplay experience, so with AFMF 2 turned on and in Search Mode, fallback is reduced. When in “Auto” mode, the feature adjusts itself depending on the resolution, so at 1440p or higher resolutions, it runs at the “High” setting to reduce fallback. At 1080p, the optimal setting for this feature is “Standard”, which it switches to automatically.

The “Performance Mode” comes with two settings; “Quality” and “Performance”. By default, AFMF 2 in Performance Mode is on the Quality preset, but the Performance preset reduces the overhead of AFMF 2 and makes it compatible with mode devices including integrated graphics cards.

Another aspect that AMD has made improvements on with AFMF 2 compared to the previous version is the latency. With AFMF, while it generated additional frames for a smoother gaming experience, it also increased the latency, so with AFMF 2, AMD has been able to reduce the latency for a gameplay experience that not only looks smooth but feels smooth as well.

The increased latency from AFMF was, to some extent, mitigated by using AMD Anti-Lag and that works similarly with AFMF 2 and the newer version of Anti-Lag which was introduced earlier this year. Using the two technologies together showed significant performance improvements in games and from AMD’s latest testing of AFMF 2 with Anti-Lag 2, it found a 28% average lower latency at 4K in Cyberpunk 2077 with “Ray Tracing” set to “Ultra”.

AMD also has some recommendations for when gamers should use AFMF 2 in combination with Anti-Lag or Radeon Chill (which allows setting FPS caps). If you find that in-game FPS is way below the monitor's maximum refresh rate, use AFMF 2 with Radeon Anti-lag. If the in-game FPS goes higher than the monitor's maximum refresh rate, use AFMF 2 with Radeon Chill.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 Compatibility

The new AI-based frame generation technology works with AMD Radeon RX 6000 and RX 7000 series GPUs that are based on the RDNA 2 architecture. It is compatible with desktop and mobile versions of these GPUs, as well as Ryzen 7000 series processors that come with integrated Radeon graphics on both desktop and mobile. Furthermore, with Radeon RX 7000 and Radeon 700M series graphic cards, AFMF 2 also supports borderless full-screen along with the regular full-screen mode.

How to Enable AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2

AMD has released AFMF 2 as a free driver update for compatible GPUs, but it is in its Technical Preview stage, which means this is an early first look at the technology, and it will be further refined when it is released as an update to the public. The company has pointed out that there may be some bugs and issues and if you experience any, use the AMD Bug Report Tool to share feedback and help make the feature even better. AMD is planning on releasing the final version of AFMF 2 by Q4 this year. It also recommends a clean installation of this driver, which means uninstalling your current AMD software driver and performing a driver clean-up before installation.
