Summary
- Scorpions in Animal Crossing are rare and valuable, making it exciting that a player discovered a safe way to catch them easily.
- Using the camera app in the game pauses scorpions' behavior, making it easier for players to trap and catch them.
- This unintended mechanic is just one of many quirks players continue to discover in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
An Animal Crossing: New Horizons player accidentally discovered a safe way to catch scorpions while playing the game casually by taking advantage of a unique exploit with one of the game's major mechanics. The discovery quickly blew up online due to the rarity of scorpions in Animal Crossing and the amount of in-game currency they typically sell for, which makes them a huge commodity.
Animal Crossing has a wide variety of creatures to catch, ranging from fish and sea creatures to insects and arachnids, the most valuable of which are tarantulas and scorpions. Naturally, the rarity of scorpions is somewhat proportional to their value, as they are not only uncommon in the first place, but catching them can be a hassle since they often sting players and run away if they get too close.
November 29 Is Going to be a Sad Day For Animal Crossing Fans
Animal Crossing fans are in for a disappointment in late November, though Nintendo has some good news for the series' future.
This was not so for Reddit user No_Wave_8516, however, who shared a video to the official Animal Crossing subreddit of their character encountering a scorpion before opening their camera, expecting to sting them and hoping to capture the moment. Surprisingly, though, instead of stinging them, the scorpion continues to chase them around the area and trap itself, allowing the player to catch it easily.
Animal Crossing Fan Makes Catching Scorpions Easier
The event came as a shock to not only the original poster, but other fans online as well, who were both surprised and seemingly grateful for the reveal, as it is likely to make their own experiences easier. Users in the comments pointed out that while the method works for scorpions and likely tarantulas, since they behave similarly, it remains to be seen whether it also works with wasps, one of the other dangerous creatures in Animal Crossing.
While not likely an intended feature by Nintendo, this method of catching scorpions seems to be a quirk of using the camera app on the player's phone in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that pauses certain behaviors so that the player can take a photo. Certain quirks of the game's mechanics can lead to some amusing and even sometimes useful results, like the ability to farm fish bait materials infinitely in New Horizons.
Despite having released over four years ago at this point, Animal Crossing players continue to discover new quirks and unintended features in the game, sometimes even providing new avenues of gameplay. Without any current information about a new Animal Crossing game from Nintendo, all players can do is keep playing New Horizons and see what else they can discover.
