Fate/Stay Night Remastered has been treated to a release date, August 8. But that date will only see it reach the Switch and PC, with the game skipping PlayStation consoles despite being published by Sony Group-owned Aniplex Inc.

Fate/Stay Night is a visual novel developed by the genre veterans at Type-Moon. It was originally released on PC in 2004 before being ported to the PS2 and PS Vita in 2007 and 2012, respectively. It even received mobile ports in 2015, although none of its versions have ever been launched outside of Japan. Come January 2024, Aniplex announced it will be remastering the PS Vita port of Fate/Stay Night for the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Fate/Stay Night Remastered Is Skipping PlayStation Consoles

Seven months later, the publisher has now committed to a firm release date for the remaster, August 8. But its latest announcement has also reiterated that Fate/Stay Night Remastered will only be landing on Steam and eShop. The Sony subsidiary hasn't elaborated on the circumstances that led to the decision to skip PlayStation consoles with this release.

PlayStation Consoles Don't Get Many Visual Novels

One possible explanation for why Fate/Stay Night Remastered isn't coming to the PS4 or PS5 for the time being is that visual novels aren't exactly a massively popular niche on Sony's consoles. This genre has historically been by far the most represented on PC, followed by handhelds. E.g., the Nintendo Switch has long enjoyed a large selection of high-quality visual novels, but such games aren't as common releases on Sony and Xbox home consoles. It is hence possible that Aniplex deemed a PlayStation version of Fate/Stay Night Remastered not worth pursuing, at least for the time being.

The remaster of Fate/Stay Night will be far from the first Aniplex-published game to skip Sony's consoles. Visual novel Hookah Haze did the same just last month, having launched on the Switch and PC on July 11. Ditto for visual novels Hira Hira Hihiru and Murder Mystery Paradox: Fifteen Years of Summer, both of which debuted as PC-only titles back in late 2023. Tactical RPG The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy will follow suit in early 2025, when Aniplex will only publish it for Nintendo's hybrid console and PC.

As for the release at hand, Fate/Stay Night Remastered will retail for $29.99, but also enjoy a 10% launch discount until August 21. That's according to its eShop page, which is already accepting pre-orders. The game's Steam listing still doesn't have any pricing information available. Although the visual novel won't be making its way to PlayStation platforms, owners of Sony's consoles at least have Honkai: Star Rail's Fate/Stay Night crossover to look forward to in 2025.
