  • The Nintendo Switch version of Antonblast can now run at 60 FPS after a performance update.
  • The new update also fixed various bugs and made some other unspecified changes.

The Nintendo Switch version of the recently released 2D side-scroller Antonblast should now be able to run at 60 FPS thanks to a new performance update, according to the game's developer Summitsphere. Antonblast is the latest entry in the studio's Anton series of indie titles.

Among the highest-rated games of 2024 on the review aggregate site OpenCritic, Antonblast is a fast-paced action platformer that Summitsphere once described as a mix between the Crash Bandicoot and Wario Land titles. It launched on PC on December 3 following a successful Kickstarter campaign, while a Switch release was delayed to December 13 in an effort to allow for more optimization. Despite being given more development time, players noted that Antonblast's Switch build suffered from poor performance and crashes. Fortunately, Summitsphere's latest update for this version of the game has addressed the aforementioned issues and more.

In a recent Twitter post, Summitsphere said that a performance patch for Antonblast on the Switch that went live over the holidays has boosted the frame rate to 60 FPS and fixed some lingering bugs. The update also delivered other changes, but these were not identified. Many players confirmed the improvements, but some said that Antonblast's frame rate on the Switch was still inconsistent and occasionally dipped below its target.

Antonblast on Switch Gets 60 FPS Performance Boost

While there are plenty of games that can run at 60 FPS on the Switch, it is not unusual for more graphically demanding titles to feature compromises like lower performance and worse visual fidelity. The Switch port of CD Projekt Red's critically acclaimed open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for instance, struggled to maintain 30 FPS at launch even when it ran at just 540p.

The Switch handhelds are powered by variants of the Nvidia Tegra X1, a system-on-chip that was already deemed outdated by some when the very first model of Nintendo's popular console came out in March 2017. A successor to the Switch is expected to have the newer Nvidia Tegra T239, which should be significantly more powerful than the Tegra X1, as its CPU. More information regarding the upcoming machine will be revealed before the fiscal year ends on March 31, 2025, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has assured.

Antonblast currently has an average score of 85 on OpenCritic, with many praising its gameplay, art style, level design, and humor. Summitsphere announced around a week after the game's initial PC release that the platformer had already managed to sell one million copies.
