US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appears to be interested in doing a second Among Us event with popular Twitch streamers. In 2020, AOC played several rounds of Among Us with fellow congressional representative Ilhan Omar and Twitch streamers including Pokimane, DisguisedToast, xQc, and HasanAbi. The session was massively popular, viewed by hundreds of thousands of interested fans. Now it seems that AOC may be interested in running it back and doing an Among Us stream once again. On October 19, 2020, AOC sent out a message on Twitch asking if anyone wanted to play Among Us with her to "get out the vote." Not only did Ilhan Omar respond in the affirmative, but many different popular Twitch streamers responded, too. The next day AOC played several rounds of Among Us, and even got the opportunity to play as an Imposter. AOC was running for reelection at the time and early voting had already opened. Among Us was an opportunity for her to encourage voting and draw attention to her campaign. Now AOC might be ready for some more Among Us, if her recent tweets are to be believed. Twitch streamer HasanAbi responded to one of AOC's Twitter posts, saying, "let's run it back," in reference to her previous Among Us sessions. AOC responded, saying, "Yeah let's do it." The responses don't appear to be planned, so there's no guarantee that more Among Us will be played, but it's still an encouraging sight to see for those who do want to see AOC play more games.
The initial response from HasanAbi was prompted by a joke made by AOC on Twitter. Republican governor and 2024 presidential candidate Ron DeSantis launched his campaign yesterday and a Twitter Space stream of his had been described by some as the largest group that "has ever met online." AOC laughed in response, saying that more people watched her stream when she played Among Us. This appears to be correct, with DeSantis' stream drawing around 300,000 and the AOC Among Us session pulling well over 400,000 viewers.
AOC is known to be a fan of video games. While her 2020 Twitch stream was her first experience with Among Us, AOC has previously confirmed that she's a fan of League of Legends, as well as Animal Crossing. It's very likely AOC sees Among Us as more of an opportunity than out of pure interest in the game. That doesn't mean she won't have fun with the experience at the same time, though.
It's undeniable that AOC is becoming an increasingly popular figure within the Democratic Party. Her reelection to the US House of Representatives won't take place until 2024, but AOC could use Twitch and Among Us to start building political momentum now. Presidential campaigning is already starting, after all. The next year and a half will be a battle to control the political discussion, which AOC is certainly keenly aware of. Among Us could play a surprising role in American politics in the near future.
Among Us is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and mobile devices.
