Summary

  • The game's recent decline in performance was attributed to changes in freemium content access in the battle pass for Season 22.
  • EA remains focused on providing sustained support, seasonal content updates, and innovations to correct course for Apex Legends.

Electronic Arts' top executive recently dropped some interesting comments on a potential follow-up to its battle royale game Apex Legends. The publisher has continued to report declining player numbers for Apex Legends over time.

Set in the same universe as the beloved Titanfall series, Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends is widely regarded as one of the best free-to-play shooters out on the market. While the game is still popular, it failed to meet publisher EA's expectations in the last financial quarter and became a major talking point in the company's latest earnings call. EA revealed its future plans for Apex Legends during this meeting with investors and even answered questions regarding the title's possible successor.

During EA’s October 29 Q2 2025 earnings conference, company chairperson and CEO Andrew Wilson avoided mentioning any details related to a theoretical Apex Legends sequel when asked if the change in strategy for the game moving forward would require the creation of something like a 2.0 version. However, the top executive said that the second iteration of a thing has almost never been as successful as the original, implying that EA may believe that a second Apex Legends game would likely perform worse than the original. Wilson added that EA is currently focused on providing its community with continued support and delivering new content on a season-by-season basis.

Wilson also touched on Dragon Age: The Veilguard in EA's most recent earnings call, with the CEO saying that he believes in the upcoming RPG's potential to become a breakout hit. He recalled how the last Dragon Age entry, 2014's Inquisition, still hailed by many as one of BioWare's most well-written games, was a top performer for EA when it was released.

In May, EA revealed that Apex Legends had already generated $3.4 billion worth of revenue since launching in 2019. The poorer than expected performance of the game last quarter was attributed to expanded access to freemium content in the battle pass for the ongoing 22nd season. EA now plans to grow Apex Legends' seasonal content and deliver innovations to the game in an effort to correct course. According to Wilson, the company believes in the strength of the Apex Legends brand, the size of its global community, and the game's position relative to its peers.

These days, Apex Legends attracts an average of around 150,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, according to data provided by analytics tracker SteamDB. The game peaked at more than 624,000 players on the Valve-owned platform in February 2023, or around the same time Season 16 dropped.
