Apex Legends may not boast a 100-player lobby like other Battle Royale games, but its 60-player matches are renowned for their speed and action-packed gameplay. You won't find yourself spending 20 minutes traversing the map, hoping you will run into some foes. The game capitalizes on its decently sized maps and fewer players to create an intense gaming experience. But what if you only want two players in the lobby?

What if you want to go head-to-head against your friend, like the good old days of Rust in Modern Warfare 2? Well, you definitely can — with a few caveats, that is. Here's what you need to know.

How To 1v1 Against Your Friend In Apex Legends

Apex Legends doesn't have a dedicated 1v1 game mode. While you can technically create your own private server, the match won't begin unless you have the required number of players in the lobby (30 for Battle Royale modes and 6 for Mixtape). However, there's a clever workaround for those itching for a 1v1 showdown. However, this workaround doesn't apply to Mixtape or Battle Royale maps.

Your opponent must be on your friend list.

The Firing Range is the answer you are looking for. One specific option in that mode transforms the training area into a perfect 1v1 arena. Its compact size and access to every gun in the game ensure intense matches. Here's how to set it up.

  1. From the Main Menu, use the Friend Icon located on the bottom right to invite the person you want to play against.
  2. Select the Firing Range game mode, located on the bottom right.
  3. Once both of you have loaded in, hold the Customize Range button to open up the Range settings.
  4. Turn on Friendly Fire. It’s the second-to-last option in the first section.
    • The Friendly Fire option will be grayed out if there’s only one player in the lobby.
  5. Now, the game will allow you to damage your friends in the Firing Range.
  6. Choose your preferred legend and loadout, and have at it against your friends.

There are infinite spawns in the Firing Range, meaning you can 1v1 as many times as your heart desires.

Additionally, you can set up a 1v1v1 match by repeating the above steps but inviting 2 players to the lobby instead of one.
