It's been a big month for Respawn and EA's shooter, Apex Legends. The mainline game has just kicked off its 13th season, adding in the newest Legend known as Newcastle, a strong defensive character that has more than enough tools to keep the team alive. In addition, the Storm Point map has also been updated with new points of interest, players can utilize a custom match system, and start working through an all new battle pass.
However, the Apex Legends Mobile title has also launched for iOS and Android devices, bringing the battle royale experience to those on the go. The mobile title has a few differences from its console and PC sibling, including a smaller roster of characters as well as exclusive game modes. The mobile version even features a brand-new character known as Fade, a shifty character that can manipulate time by rewinding himself as well as phase shifting all players nearby.
One of the bigger changes to Apex Legends Mobile from the console and PC version is a perk system. For both new and longtime players, the system can certainly be a change of pace, so here's what it does and how to effectively utilize it.
What is the Apex Legends Perk System?
The perk system inside of Apex Legends Mobile, allows players to essentially unlock tokens to spend on a perk tree for each character. Players can find the perk trees under the Legends tab from the main menu of Apex Legends, though it is worth noting that the feature first needs to be unlocked through playing a handful of matches. Each Legend's tree contains unlockable perks, finishers, and abilities, as well as cosmetic items to allow players to further customize the look of their character.
Once the Perk system is unlocked, players will earn 1 token through playing and leveling up specific characters. Keep in mind that these tokens can't be used for any character, as unlocked tokens are linked to the character they're earned with. Perks also get more expensive the further down the tree players go, though the rewards are arguably better.
How Does it Work?
As players spend tokens and get deeper into each Legend's specific perk tree, they'll start unlocking new options including different perks, finishers, and abilities. Perks are essentially passive bonuses similar to what players would find in Call of Duty multiplayer. Finisher perks give players an additional boost after performing a takedown on a downed enemy, while the Ability perk triggers when the player activates their character's tactical like Octane's Stim or Pathfinder's Grapple.
Keep in mind that characters can only have a select amount equipped at a time, namely 1 finisher, 1 ability, and then 3 perks. However, players can create multiple loadouts to swap between and help make their character feel unique from another player's version. In addition, some of these perks also have passive abilities, like Bloodhound's Execution called Loser's Nourishment which restores all shields and 30 HP after using a finisher on a downed enemy.
Apex Legends Mobile is available now on Android and iOS devices.
