EA and Respawn announced that the popular battle royale shooter Apex Legends is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on August 5 with improved visuals and performance compared to its Switch 1 counterpart. This unexpected announcement was made during the July 31st Nintendo Direct, which showed gameplay of Apex Legends running on Nintendo Switch 2.

Apex Legends is well into its sixth year of operations with Season 26: Showdown looming on the horizon. There have been many changes over the years, and Season 26 may bring some of the game's biggest changes yet. Apex Legends Season 26 will introduce the new Wildcard game mode as a permanent addition to the game, and there will be new weapon and legend meta changes and adjustments. Season 26 will launch on August 5, and the seasonal update will be accompanied by the release of the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2 version.

The Best War Games speaks with a handful of Apex Legends devs about all the changes coming in season 26, including the permanent new game mode: Wildcard.

A brief 45-second trailer for Apex Legends was released at the recent Nintendo Direct to showcase the Nintendo Switch 2 version. The Switch 2 version will have all the features that fans have come to expect from Apex Legends, including the Battle Royale and limited-time modes. The trailer also confirmed the Battle Royale and Mixtape modes will have "improved resolution and smoother performance," implying 60 FPS support. However, exact performance metrics for the Switch 2 version will likely be confirmed soon. What's more, Respawn confirmed that players who log into Apex Legends on Switch 1 or Switch 2 before September 16 will receive the Legendary Pathfinder skin, “P.A.T.H.”

Apex Legends is Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 Alongside Season 26: Showdown Update on August 5

Shortly after the trailer's release, Respawn shared a deep-dive video on Twitter to highlight the new Wildcard mode, which supports 30-player lobbies in Apex Legends. Wildcard offers faster gameplay, loot explosions, and more chances to get back into the action. Wildcard is one of the main highlights of Season 26 alongside Caustic and Bangalore buffs and new Ranked changes for Apex Legends, which Switch 2 players will be able to experience as well. Patch notes detailing what's changing and being added in Apex Legends Season 26 will be revealed soon.

Ahead of Season 26, Respawn rolled out a temporary matchmaking change for Ranked in Apex Legends that further limits the matches that Masters and Predator players can join. The change was implemented in a matchmaking test across all regions and platforms with the purpose of "improving the skill distribution across Ranked matches." Respawn noted that this change was highly requested among players, since lower-ranked squads have complained of uneven skill distribution in Apex Legends lobbies in recent months.
