Arc Raiders reveals a new Projects system, which will attempt to ease the controversy and frustrations commonly associated with progression wipes in extraction games. With Arc Raiders set to launch at the end of October, there's certainly a lot of excitement and anticipation from fans.
For many online games, there's some sort of progression wipe or level reset which puts all players back at the proverbial starting line. For many survival or extraction games, like Rust and even Escape from Tarkov feature some sort of progression wipe, with the latter typically happening every 5–8 months or so. With online multiplayer titles, progression wipes can be a controversial element for players, though Embark is attempting to bridge the gap with a unique way of handling this aspect of the game.
ARC Raiders on PS5 and Xbox Comes With a Catch
Embark Studios reveals that ARC Raiders will come with a catch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S that potential players should be aware of.
Ark Raiders Has "Voluntary" Progression Wipes
Embark is adding a feature called Projects to Arc Raiders, which unlocks for players who reach level 20. The Expedition Project will be on an 8-week repeating cycle, starting from the Arc Raiders launch date and running through December 21. Embark also says completing the project will be a "somewhat large time investment" to work through, though progress will be retained for those who don't quite make it to the end. Completing a project means a player will lose things like levels, skills, items/inventory, workshop, and crafting capabilities. Any cosmetics, achievements, and awards will be retained as well as any sort of metagame or paid for items as well.
While Embark admits that this likely won't be a cure-all solution, the studio feels that a traditional mandatory progression wipe in extraction shooters isn't a good way to respect the time of players. However, for those who opt to wipe their progression, they'll be offered incentives like permanent account unlocks, unique cosmetic rewards, account "buffs" that last for the duration of the Expedition cycle, with additional progression resets increasing the effects to a limit. It's worth noting that these buffs will not offer a power or combat advantage over others, and instead offer a smoother progression system.
It'll be interesting to see how the community ultimately takes to this new system, with plenty of anticipation for the game thanks to its strong word of mouth and highly successful Arc Raiders playtests earlier this year. In fact, Embark saw a bit of controversy over the summer, teasing a major announcement that many expected to be some sort of shadow drop or a launch date that was a lot closer than that actual reveal of an October 30 release.
