The upcoming Assassin's Creed Hexe is one of many projects for the IP that are currently shrouded in mystery. With Hexe only being the current codename for the title, this particular game is one of the most intriguing upcoming projects thanks to the fact that fans know nothing about it.

With that being said, there is a lot that can already be inferred about Assassin's Creed Hexe, with a lot of dominant theories already gaining serious traction. The codename Hexe in particular provides a huge wealth of information, giving fans an informed idea of what experiences the game will hold upon release.

The Value Behind Assassin's Creed Codenames

Many games usually go by limited-time working titles during early stages of their development, before revealing the true title of a project closer to release. The Assassin's Creed franchise is clearly taking this approach a step further with its many upcoming releases, having employed dedicated codenames for almost all of them.

These codenames often possess great amounts of hidden context and information regarding the game in question, as seen with the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage. AC Mirage was originally codenamed Rift, for example. This codename led to many early theories regarding how the game's protagonist Basim would be experiencing a mental rift due to his status as a sage for the Isu God Loki. It is now known that this is true, with other franchise codenames holding similar value and validity.

Of course, codenames such as Assassin's Creed Red are quite overt in their meaning, with that particular game being set in Japan. Assassin's Creed Hexe, however, is one of the most obscure yet informative codenames the franchise has seen, offering huge value for fans who dig a little deeper into the codename's true meaning.

Assassin's Creed Hexe's Informative Codename

The only information that fans have regarding Assassin's Creed Hexe are its brief reveal trailer as well as the codename of the title. This trailer shows a sinister forest and an Assassin Brotherhood twig-sigil lit by a crackling fire. The tone and themes of the trailer are quite unusual for the franchise, giving fans a great basis to take forward into any analysis of the project's codename.

Many will associate the word hexe as describing a form of curse or ill-intended spell, with this being very in-line with the prevailing rumors surrounding the title. Even more useful, however, is the fact that hexe is an Old German word literally meaning witch, all but confirming that Hexe will be exploring witchcraft in some capacity.

The leading theories behind Hexe suggest the title will be set during the reign of the Holy Roman Empire in mainland Europe. This era included a period of intense persecution against alleged witches, particularly around the areas of modern-day Germany. With this in mind, it appears that Assassin's Creed Hexe will be set around a coven of persecuted witches, perhaps living within the same kinds of woods as seen in the project's reveal trailer.

The Holy Roman Empire is also the perfect kind of institution that the Templar Order have historically infiltrated, with its intense power and control potentially being manipulated by the Templars in-game. A coven of witches would also be a good setting to finally foster a dedicated female protagonist for a mainline Assassin's Creed title, which is something that Ubisoft has clearly been edging towards in recent releases. Despite such little information being available for Assassin's Creed Hexe, the title's codename gives an unprecedented amount of details regarding the game's likely setting and involved characters.

Assassin's Creed Hexe is currently in development.
