The Assassin's Creed  franchise has been on an interesting journey over the course of the past few years, shifting from a simple stealth-oriented action series into full-fledged RPG's with dialogue and romance options. Now, a new rumor says that Assassin's Creed  may be returning to Italy, despite some fan theories that the game would be going to Japan. It also appears that many of the new features will be coming along with it.

The information was posted anonymously on a message board with a few other key details about the game, which is supposedly operating under the codename "Legion." The post claims that the game will be set towards the end of Marcus Aurelius' reign, during the struggles of his son Commodus and the Year of the 5 Emperors, which would put the game around 193 AD.

Given Assassin's Creed's  tendency to try and put as many historical figures as possible into each of their games, the setting would make sense. The game is rumored to release in 2020, which further confirms Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered is the only game fans get this year.

The post also claims that the game will feature both a male and female protagonist, called Cassius and Lucia, respectively. Players would be able to choose whichever gender they please, and both characters are descendants of characters from Origins  and Odyssey. However, there isn't any information as to which character will be canon, like in AC Odyssey, which features Kassandra as the canon option.

A blurry screenshot was posted along with the information, though the architecture is similar enough to some of Odyssey's  that it could be faked.

The game will also supposedly feature more of the politics within the Assassins, as well as being more First Civilization intensive where the story is concerned. The map will feature mainland Italy as well as some parts of Gaul and Germania as a playable area, which should provide some pretty impressive scenery if Ubisoft is able to work the same magic they did with the most recent game.

Assassin's Creed  games have a long history of being leaked, either unintentionally or as a form of marketing by Ubisoft. Even the most recent entry, Assassin's Creed Odyssey,  was leaked via a piece of merchandise that surfaced too early. Still, the post could easily be made up, so all of the information should be taken with a sizeable grain of salt. It would be interesting to see the beginning of the Italian chapter of the Brotherhood, though, as it could give some additional detail about Ezio's story. Regardless, hopefully, the next entry is even more ambitious than the last few.

Assassin's Creed Codename Legion  is rumored to be released in 2020.
