Ubisoft made some major announcements on July 21 that will impact its upcoming line-up. First and foremost, it announced that the highly anticipated Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora game was getting delayed into the 2023-2024 fiscal year. It has also been reported that a total of four games at the company have been canceled, with two of those being Splinter Cell VR and Ghost Recon Frontline.

While this is some shuffling around, it’s not necessarily a bad thing for the company. Splinter Cell VR would be a loss, as fans want a new game (even if not exactly VR), and Frontline’s reception was underwhelming at best. It seems, ultimately, that Ubisoft is putting a lot of expectation onto its Assassin’s Creed franchise.

According to a new report, multiple Assassin’s Creed projects are in development. This isn’t necessarily groundbreaking to anyone familiar with the franchise’s development cycle or Ubisoft’s large size, and many games have been reported about thus far—yet this details a new one. Assassin’s Creed Red is a codenamed project that is said to be part of the larger Infinity project, and it’s possible this title is the Japan-set Assassin’s Creed game that has been previously reported on.

However, Assassin's Creed Infinity is a little confusing. What players should know is that it’s a “hub” game with multiple settings, and it’s set to be the next mainline entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Details are scarce, but considering it’s a live-service title, it stands to reason Infinity will launch with a handful of settings and be expanded down the road. It sounds like Assassin’s Creed Red is one of those titles and is reportedly set in Asia, possibly Japan specifically.

It should be noted that another rumor suggested a new Assassin’s Creed setting would be the Aztecs. It’s possible this Aztec setting is one of the launch locations for Assassin’s Creed Infinity or it could be tied to another project. Outside of Assassin’s Creed Red/AC Infinity, a smaller Assassin’s Creed Rift project is reported to be in development. It is said to feature Basim and set in Baghdad.

Beyond even those, there are hints at an Assassin’s Creed VR project (codenamed Nexus), unless Ubi is pulling out of VR completely and it’s one of the other rumored titles. Then, some fans believe an AC1 remake is in the works. Overall, there’s clearly a lot in the works—perhaps even more than this—but if AC Red does take players to Japan, it’ll likely make long-time fans very happy.
