A Switch 2 version of Assassin's Creed Shadows has leaked online, having been spotted in a premature retailer listing. The development adds to the growing list of evidence suggesting Assassin's Creed Shadows will soon be making the jump to Nintendo's latest hybrid console.

The newest entry in Ubisoft's hit franchise was released for the current-gen consoles and PC on March 20. By then, rumors of an Assassin's Creed Shadows Switch 2 port had already been circulating for months, having first emerged in 2024.

Assassin's Creed Shadows Switch 2 Physical Release Spotted on French Retailer Website

Another piece of evidence testifying to the existence of an Assassin's Creed Shadows Switch 2 port has now surfaced online in the form of a prematurely published product page. The listing, spotted on the website of French retailer Auchan, shows a physical version of the game for Nintendo's latest console, but one that won't be available on a cartridge. Instead, the sole product image shows a box with a Game-Key Card label.

Assassin's Creed Shadows May Not Fit on Any Existing Switch 2 Cartridge

The installation size of Assassin's Creed Shadows ranges from approximately 100GB to 123GB, depending on the platform and game version. In contrast, the largest Switch 2 cartridges currently in production hold up to 64GB. Even with reduced texture quality and more aggressive compression, Ubisoft may have struggled to fit the game on a cartridge. Another factor contributing to the purported use of the Game-Key Card format is loading speed, which is significantly faster when a title runs from the Switch 2’s internal flash memory. Game-Key Cards are also less expensive to produce than cartridges. These three factors help explain why many third-party Switch 2 titles are adopting the format over traditional physical releases, despite widespread fan criticism due to ownership concerns and inconvenience.

During a July 2025 quarterly earnings call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot mentioned that Assassin's Creed Shadows will have "new versions" coming out in the near future. Separately, the executive also told investors that the company would have a yet-to-be-announced Switch 2 title releasing during the ongoing fiscal year, which ends in March 2026. Some industry watchers took this to mean that the Switch 2 version of Assassin's Creed Shadows is all but confirmed.

Ubisoft has already started supporting Nintendo's latest hybrid console, having released Star Wars Outlaws on the eShop in September 2025. Apart from the Switch 2, the "new versions" of Assassin's Creed Shadows Guillemot mentioned over the summer likely include the game's iOS port, which was already officially announced but is still waiting for a release date.
