Assassin's Creed Shadows has been one of the most successful games of the year, so far. This entry finally brought the long-running series to Japan, opening doors to a brand-new setting with dynamic gameplay, thanks to its dual protagonist approach. Assassin's Creed Shadows may have launched back in March, but it's been revealed that the game is already set to have plenty of extra content to look forward to.

Year one post-launch roadmaps are nothing new in gaming, but what makes Shadows' plans so exciting is due to the impressive amount of content that's been teased. Shadows' post-launch plans bring quality of life improvements, new in-game content and quests, and even its first expansion, Claws of Awaji. This approach to fleshing out Shadows even more is exciting, but it also sets a new standard for the franchise moving forward.

Rumor: Assassin's Creed Shadows Could Be Getting Multiplayer

As Ubisoft teases upcoming content, new data suggests that Assassin's Creed Shadows could bring back multiplayer to the franchise.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' Post-Launch Roadmap Promises Longevity and a Larger Focus on Strong Content

A Few Highlights Planned for Assassin's Creed Shadows This Year

  • The Claws of Awaji DLC (release date TBD)
  • New Game Plus (release date TBD)
  • Parkour update (late May)
  • New difficulty settings (June)
  • New ally (June)

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what to expect from the first year of Assassin's Creed Shadows, but it promises even more beyond 2025. If Ubisoft is going this hard for the first year, then the second year also seems bound to have plenty of content, as well. It may not be on the same level as the game's first year, but starting off strong is a good sign for the future. The future of Assassin's Creed Shadows is looking bright, but what's even more exciting is that this hopefully means that the next entry in the series is getting the time it needs in production.

Claws of Awaji takes place on the new island of Awaji, as Naoe and Yasuke search for a mysterious treasure.

Assassin's Creed Hexe Waits in the Wings

  • Hexe is the next Assassin's Creed game in line after Shadows.
  • Teased as a darker turn for the franchise, the story takes place during the witch trials in the Holy Roman Empire.
  • Ubisoft has yet to reveal a release date.

Right now, there's no telling when Hexe will be ready, but the promise of a darker, horror-influenced Assassin's Creed game is compelling. Thankfully, Shadows' post-launch plans are bound to make the wait for Hexe not feel as long. This could potentially benefit Hexe, as well. Shadows was delayed twice, and while Ubisoft puts in an effort to bring more content to its Japan-based entry, that could buy the team working on Hexe a lot more time, so delays can hopefully be avoided.

There have been a lot of questions surrounding Hexe. As game development quickly gets more complex, games will simply take longer, and for a story as experimental as Hexe, extra time isn't a bad thing. Shadows was experimental in some ways, too, as it brought dual protagonists to the franchise. Sometimes, experimenting with such an established series can backfire, but the success of Shadows has shown that this risk-taking can also pay off.

Assassin's Creed Shadows reached 3 million players in its first week.

Hexe Can Hopefully Meet the Expectations Set by Shadows

Leading up to Shadows, there was a lot of concern about the game's state, but it's proven to be a hit for Ubisoft. Ubisoft has had a rocky few years, and Shadows could signal that the developer is digging itself out of its slump.

The future of Assassin's Creed may still be uncertain, but right now, Shadows has shown that the franchise still has plenty to offer. Shadows brought players a lot of exciting features at launch, but there's even more to look forward to.
