Summary

  • With 104 Game of the Year wins so far, Astro Bot is now the most awarded platformer ever.
  • Astro Bot surpassed the previous record holder, It Takes Two, by 16 awards.
  • However, matching the award counts of heavy hitters like Elden Ring and The Last of Us Part 2 seems unlikely for Astro Bot.

Astro Bot has officially claimed the throne as the most awarded platforming game of all time. While Astro Bot's Game of the Year victory at The Game Awards 2024 was more than enough to cement it as an exceptional title, the Team Asobi platformer now has another astonishing achievement under its belt.

Announced in May 2024, Astro Bot instantly seemed like the type of game fans of the franchise had been asking for: a much-expanded version of the PS5's hugely-popular Astro's Playroom tech demo with a heaping dose of additional PlayStation-related cameos. While Sony didn't quite see Astro Bot as a tentpole title for the PS5, the platformer defied all expectations when it launched in September 2024. Astro Bot quickly became the highest-rated new game release of 2024, and subsequent months saw the game accrue even more glory.

Astro Bot Developer Didn't Expect to Win GOTY at The Game Awards

Team Asobi didn't expect Astro Bot to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024, and the developers shared their thoughts about the moment.

During last month's The Game Awards 2024 ceremony, Astro Bot picked up a plethora of accolades and ended the night with a bang by taking home the coveted Game of the Year award. Many assumed this would be the pinnacle of Astro Bot's winning streak, but a recent discovery proves otherwise. Twitter user NextGenPlayer pointed out in a recent tweet that Astro Bot has received 104 Game of the Year awards so far, granting it the status of most awarded platformer in history. The information comes courtesy of gamefa.com's Game of the Year Award Tracker, where similar statistics can be viewed for previous winners as well.

Astro Bot Snags 104 Game of the Year Wins, Becomes Most Awarded Platformer of All Time

The last record holder for most awarded platformer was Hazelight Studios' It Takes Two, which also won Game of the Year back in 2021. Astro Bot has dethroned It Takes Two by a substantial margin of 16 awards, and this lead may expand down the line. However, the prospect of Astro Bot's award tallies matching heavy hitters like Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, and The Last of Us Part 2 seems quite unlikely. Baldur's Gate 3 and The Last of Us Part 2 currently stand at 288 and 326 Game of the Year wins respectively, and Elden Ring maintains its record as the most awarded game ever with a staggering 435 Game of the Year nabs.

Still, there's no denying Astro Bot has turned out immensely successful for both Team Asobi and Sony. On the commercial front, Astro Bot surpassed 1.5 million copies sold as of November 2024, which isn't all that bad considering the game was created by less than 70 developers in a three-year timeframe and likely required a moderate budget. If Astro Bot wasn't a major PlayStation franchise before, it almost certainly is now.
