Boasting widespread critical acclaim and becoming the highest-rated game of 2024, Astro Bot also won Game of the Year, beating out heavy hitters like Metaphor: Refantazio and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The platformer, which currently has an average critic score of 95 on OpenCritic, has been widely praised by audiences for its level design, throwbacks to beloved PlayStation classics, and gameplay, which many have likened to the Super Mario series. In Summer 2004, fans began requesting an Astro Bot PS5 controller, as a DualSense seemed to appear in the game's original trailer. Sony listened, and it wasn't long before a special-edition peripheral made its way to the PlayStation Store.

During Sony's June 2025 State of Play presentation, it was announced that the Astro Bot DualSense controller for the PS5 will be released once again in 2025. However, according to the game's director, Nicolas Doucent, the device will include a "special twist to the touch pad." It's unclear what this update will entail or when pre-orders will begin, but fans are urged to keep an eye on the official PlayStation store. As with the peripherals' initial release, there will likely only be limited stock available, and it is currently unclear whether the price will remain at $79.99.

The Astro Bot DualSense Controller Is Coming Back in 2025, With a Twist

The return of this highly sought-after DualSense controller wasn't the only news regarding the popular platformer to be shared during the livestream. Astro Bot is getting some additional challenge levels on July 10, bringing the total number of planets in the game to 90. The game has continued to see a steady stream of DLC since its release, with a March Astro Bot update introducing the incredibly tough Hard to Bear level and a new Bot inspired by The Order 1886's Sir Galahad.

In February, Sony President Hiroki Totoki confirmed that the company is planning to release more games like Astro Bot in the future, putting a stronger focus on family-friendly titles. As of November 2024, Astro Bot had sold 1.5 million units, and it is estimated that the title has made back its budget by a whopping 10 times. A movie inspired by the game is also potentially in the cards, with Sony expressing interest in the project.
