Summary

  • Astro Bot update 1.004 was released for PS5 with a small size of 382.5 MB.
  • Patch notes for the update were not provided, but it likely includes bug fixes and improvements.
  • Strong sales hint at the potential for future updates and a sequel, showcasing PlayStation's investment in smaller games.

Sony and Team Asobi released another new update for the critically acclaimed 3D platformer Astro Bot. Like the game's previous update, the latest Astro Bot update is a mystery, as Team Asobi did not reveal what this update does.

Released on September 6, Astro Bot is the sequel to 2018's Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PlayStation VR and 2020's PlayStation 5 pre-installed launch title, Astro's Playroom. Astro Bot is one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year, with a 9.3/10 user score and 94 Metascore from critics on Metacritic. It also became the highest rated first-party PlayStation 5 game of all time, as critics and fans both praised the game's fun platforming mechanics and tributes to classic and modern game franchises, such as Ape Escape, Street Fighter, Yakuza, and Persona. Although Astro Bot launched in a very polished state, Team Asobi has been releasing small updates to fix any lingering bugs.

Nintendo Can Get the Lion's Share of Astro Bot's Success With One of its Own Characters

Astro Bot's incredible success should be getting Nintendo's attention, and perhaps the publisher should respond with something similar.

The version 1.004 update for Astro Bot was released on September 17 for PlayStation 5 with a 382.5 MB file size, according to Push Square. Since the Astro Bot update is very small, PlayStation gamers won't need to wait long at all for it to fully install. However, details about what this update does for Astro Bot are unknown, since Team Asobi did not release patch notes. It's assumed that Astro Bot update 1.004 applies bug fixes and other adjustments that improve the overall user experience. Additionally, it's worth noting that more Astro Bot updates could be on the way, if Team Asobi is able to introduce some of the cameos that were mentioned in the credits and didn't appear in the game's sandbox.

Astro Bot Update 1.004 Goes Live Without Patch Notes

This new update was released just five days after Astro Bot update 1.003 went live on September 12. Update 1.003 also didn't receive patch notes, and it had a similarly meager file size at just 384 MB. Before update 1.003's release, there were a few reports of game crashes that would result in the loss of autosave data. Fortunately, this issue appears to be very uncommon, and it was likely completely resolved with the release of update 1.004.

Astro Bot's strong sales performance in the US and UK is also a great sign regarding the future of the series. Moreover, Astro Bot's Platinum trophy teases a potential sequel, so it's possible that PlayStation plans to invest in smaller games and studios to diversify its library on PlayStation 5. If history repeats itself, Astro Bot can receive some content updates over time, just like Astro's Playroom, to encourage players to revisit the game, discover something new, and eagerly await the sequel whenever the time comes.
