Summary

  • Asus plans to release a second-generation successor to the ROG Ally handheld gaming console this year, focusing more on gaming features.
  • Speculations for improvements in the successor include better software, ergonomics, battery life, and upgrading to a Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor.
  • The Asus ROG Ally has been selling well in India, with 70,000-80,000 devices sold in the country.

According to the vice president of Asus India, Arnold Su, a second-generation successor of the Asus ROG Ally gaming handheld is planned to be released sometime this year. The Asus ROG Ally is a handheld gaming console that is capable of providing a gaming experience on the go while also functioning as a Windows 11 PC. This allows it to play a variety of PC games, including both the Steam and Xbox Game Pass libraries.

The Asus ROG Ally launched globally last June, with high-end and base models available for gamers to choose from. These models shared 512 GB of NVMe storage, with the lower-end base model being powered by an AMD Ryzen Z1 APU, while the more premium version sports an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU, the latter providing better graphical performance. Sporting a price of $599 for the base version and $699 for the higher-tier version, it is a contender against Valve's Steam Deck.

When is the Asus ROG Ally 2 Coming?

According to a statement provided to Techlusive, Vice President Arnold Su shared that Asus is going to be keeping up the momentum, sharing the company's plan to release its successor sometime this year. According to Su, the planned Asus ROG Ally successor will continue using the Windows OS, though it will apparently be more focused on the gaming side. "We most likely will launch a second generation [handheld gaming console] this year. We will still keep the Windows features, but we will focus more on gaming," said Su.

While Su mentioned that there are plans for the successor to be released this year, he didn't provide any information about any preliminary specifications or improvements that will be made to the Asus ROG Ally. What Su did mention was the sales of the Asus ROG Ally, which have apparently been quite good in India, selling between 70,000-80,000 devices in the country.

We most likely will launch a second generation [handheld gaming console] this year. We will still keep the Windows features, but we will focus more on gaming.

While the Asus ROG Ally's specs are quite good already, there are still some improvements that could be made to the handheld gaming PC in its successor. Some of these things include the software, ergonomics, and short battery life. Another that could be made is with the processor, going from the AMD Ryzen Z1 to the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. An upgrade to its base storage capacity from 512 GB to 1 TB would also be a welcome addition. This is mostly speculation though, so fans curious about a successor to Asus' handheld machine should wait until more official information is provided.
