Thunder Lotus Games has revealed At Fate's End during the June 8 Xbox Games Showcase. The Canadian developer's upcoming title appears to draw from several of its earlier works, including Spiritfarer.
Founded in 2014, Thunder Lotus put itself on the map with the hand-drawn Viking action adventure Jotun, originally launched in 2015 to largely positive reviews. The company followed up on that release with the roguelike metroidvania Sundered, which debuted two years later to similar acclaim. The 2020 management sim Spiritfarer has been its most universally lauded title to date, as underlined by its 87 average score and 97% reviewer recommendation rate on OpenCritic. More recently, Thunder Lotus launched the multiplayer action roguelike 33 Immortals, which has been in early access since mid-March 2025.
10 Indie Games Where The Story Can Only Be Experienced Once
These indie games hit the hardest on the first playthrough.
The Canadian studio joined the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase to unveil its latest project, At Fate's End. Set in a fantasy world fractured by family drama, the upcoming game follows Shan, a princess on a quest to claim her birthright. Her journey leads to a confrontation with her estranged sister through a series of emotionally charged battles. What sets At Fate's End apart from many other 2D action adventures is that these conflicts will feature not just swordplay, but also some strategically deployed dialogue.
At Fate's End Will Let Players Weaponize 'Psychological Insight'
These dialogue-driven mind games will effectively let players weaponize "psychological insight" in order to prevail against Shan's sister. At Fate’s End will include a skill tree that differs conceptually from the ability trees in Spiritfarer and Sundered, placing an even stronger emphasis on narrative. Thunder Lotus describes it as a “narrative skill tree,” enabling players to improve Shan’s abilities by uncovering her family history and strategically using that knowledge in battle.
Every subsequent encounter will shape both the game's story and Shan's relationships, branching into multiple storylines, some of which will lead to their own endings. Thunder Lotus Creative Director Nicolas Guérin says that At Fate's End will look to tap into a similar "emotional core" as Spiritfarer, in addition to continuing its "interplay of mechanics and narrative." Elaborating on this comparison, Guérin describes the upcoming title as more action-driven than Spiritfarer, but still poignant in its own way. "It’s [a game] about how families break apart—and how they might come back together," the creative director explained in a prepared statement.
It’s [a game] about how families break apart—and how they might come back together.
At Fate's End is presently targeting a 2026 launch, with no specific release date given just yet. The stylish action adventure is planned to launch day-one on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The PC version of At Fate's End will be available via both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
