According to its developers, the upcoming action survival title Atomfall will take the average player around 25 hours to complete. Fans have eagerly awaited Atomfall since the game was first announced in June 2024, and as launch day approaches, more details about the Rebellion Developments title are being revealed.

Taking place in an alternate version of the 1960s, Atomfall is set in the United Kingdom and imagines a world in which the 1957 Windscale fire turned Northern England into an area decimated by nuclear fallout. Players will step into the shoes of an amnesiac five years after the disaster who must fight mutated creatures, cultists, and military agents in order to discover what really happened. Many fans have already likened Atomfall to the Fallout series, as both share similar story points and survival mechanics, though Atomfall may provide players with a more stressful gaming experience due to its incredibly strict resource management and sufficiently weak protagonist.

The next mainline Fallout is still probably quite far out at this point, but the upcoming title Atomfall might mark the start of a related trend.

Ahead of Atomfall's release on March 27, Rebellion Developments' Art Director Ryan Greene sat down with IGN to share more details about the highly anticipated survival game. According to Greene, most players can expect to spend around 25 hours in Atomfall, though this number will vary depending on how much of the game a player wants to see. The developer mentions that Atomfall isn't a standard RPG, as it doesn't have a dedicated main quest or side quests. Rather, players will discover a "spider web of connected story," and they will need to follow each thread to their conclusion to see everything the game has to offer. During the interview, Greene also mentions that it's possible to complete the game even after killing everyone, and it's also seemingly possible to make it to the end without killing a single person.

During a February interview, Atomfall Lead Designer Ben Fisher spoke more about the studio's freedom when creating a new IP. Highlighting one of Atomfall's more experimental game mechanics, Fisher noted that certain events that players can trigger in the game world can have a massive impact on the enemy population. The developer also pointed out that Atomfall is meant to be an intense experience that puts the player on edge from start to finish.

It was previously confirmed that Atomfall would be a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass, with PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers welcome to jump into the action on March 27. The game will also be released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and those who preorder Atomfall's Digital Deluxe Edition will get three days of early access, a "Story Expansion Pack," a "Basic Supply Bundle" Pack, and an "Enhanced Supply Bundle" Pack.
