The big issue with being infected is that it isn't immediately clear how to deal with this status. So, this guide is here to show what this infection does and how you can cure it in Atomfall.

What Is the Infected Status In Atomfall?

As the player goes deeper into the quarantine zone, they'll start to encounter unique enemies that have been infected by the strange effects of a mysterious object called Oberon. For example, there are Ferals, zombie-like enemies who stand around in strange blue weeds and will attack the player upon seeing or hearing them.

There are also Thralls, which come later in the game and are essentially slower, but much tougher Ferals. When struck by these types of enemies, their attacks will fill up a blue, triangular meter in the bottom right corner of the screen above the health bar. If this meter fills up, the player will become infected.

This meter will also fill up if the player enters areas shrouded with blue mist. This mist will fill up the infection meter very quickly while also damaging the player. In these locations, there will usually be various plants suffering from the infection as well.

One such plant will become a bomb that will pulsate as the player gets closer. If they get too close, this bomb plant will explode and inflict damage and infection build-up.

When players are infected, they will immediately lose a large chunk of their health. They will take more damage from all sources, which will make combat considerably harder. Their heart rate will become elevated, so it won't go below 120 and rise quicker when sprinting or engaging in melee combat.

In addition to these negative side effects, you will also start to hear strange voices in your head. Throughout the game, some characters will have heard voices telling them to do things. This means that many people in Atomfall are infected, and now you are, too.

How To Cure Infection In Atomfall

As deadly as infection seems, it will eventually go away as the triangular infection meter decreases. However, this will be a slow process and could take about five real-world minutes before it fades away. This leaves players vulnerable for quite some time, so there has to be a better way to cure it.

The answer comes in the form of a consumable item called a Strange Tonic. When the player drinks this, they will be cured of the infection status and gain temporary resistance to infection build-up. Unfortunately, while they can be found in some late-game regions, these tonics are not common in most areas of the early portion of the game. If you want to get your hands on some, you'll need to find the Strange Tonic recipe so you can craft them.

Of course, acquiring that recipe isn't as easy as walking up to a trader and swapping some goods for it. Instead, you will need to infiltrate the main camp of an enemy cult that worships the infection. These enemies are called Druids, and due to their hatred of technology, they mainly use bows and melee weapons. However, they are deadly accurate with their arrows and very fast when it comes to melee. So they can still make for tough encounters despite their lack of firearms.

How To Find The Strange Tonic Recipe In Atomfall

The Druids' Camp is located in a castle in Casterfell Woods at the coordinates 19.9 E, 84.2 N. The entrance to the castle is located at the coordinates 20.6 E, 83.7 N. This will put the players at the lower levels of the Druids' base, where they'll be roaming around and performing strange rituals. Players will have to fight their way up to the top of the castle, which will be tough since this place is swarming with all sorts of Druids.

Keep making progress up the castle until you reach a room with sunlight pouring in and lots of green leafy vines. Sneak by or kill any Druids in the way, then head left into a room that looks like a study filled with desks and bookshelves.

Lying on a desk will be a bowl of Spores and the Strange Tonic recipe. Learn it, and the player can now craft these tonics using 4 Spores, 1 Chemical, 3 Glass, and 5 Herbs.
