Atomfall is set to arrive in just a few weeks, and the post-apocalyptic rewrite of actual historical events is promising a unique setting and story. Set five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster, the countryside of Northern England has become a harrowing wasteland where survival is key. On the surface, Atomfall looks like a Fallout spin-off, but its compelling setting and gameplay features may have what it takes to free it from these comparisons.

According to the game's Steam page, players have a massive mystery to uncover when it comes to the cause of the infamous Windscale event. Leading up to the game's impending launch, Atomfall has teased plenty of enemies that players will have to look out for. One of the most notable are the cultists that live in the countryside. While these enemy types seem to be the most harrowing, the real terror may lie in the game's smaller threats.

While Atomfall’s likeness to the Fallout franchise is a welcome comparison, one key difference between the two IPs would arguably be for the best.

The Mutated Creatures of Atomfall Could Create Some Stomach-Churning Moments

Creepy Crawlies Scurry Across the Wasteland

Atomfall has been sharing teasers of what players can expect from the game's environment. On top of the threat of multiple human, and even robotic, threats, there is the impending danger of mutated animals. Hordes of rats and swarms of leeches that can be found in the water bring their own horror to the game. Atomfall's rural English setting is brought further to life through these types of animalistic threats, but they could also be some of the most terrifying to come across.

Atomfall releases on March 27, 2025.

Granted, not everyone is afraid of rats and leeches, but for those who hate even the slightest sight of a scurrying creature, having to face hordes of them in the darkness of buildings can quickly cause panic. When it comes to leeches, trying to evade their attacks in water is also likely to be a huge challenge if the game's physics make moving in water realistic. There is still a lot to be discovered about Atomfall, and more mutated creatures are bound to appear. Various wildlife that are native to the area like bats, badgers, and deer could all have some kind of mutated counterpart that makes them far more sweat-inducing to encounter.

Atomfall may not have the same level of creature mutations that Fallout boasts, but the former's seemingly more realistic approach to these types of radiation-induced changes may enhance the game's realism. This could ultimately make it a more immersive experience, and the prospect of finding even more mutated creature hordes is enough to make a lot of players nervous while exploring abandoned buildings or vast forests.

Atomfall's world will work on a bartering system, foregoing in-game currency.

Confirmed Non-Creature Enemy Types

  • Cultists
  • Protocol - a military organization that manages the quarantine zone
  • B.A.R.D Robots
  • Radiation-affected zombies

Between the list of enemy types that have been confirmed combined with the threat of mutated creatures, surviving in Atomfall may be a lot easier said than done. Not only are the various threats harrowing, they are also all unique. Such a diverse roster of antagonists means that players will need to be on their guard with each step, as each faction requires different approaches to being dealt with.

As the launch date for Atomfall grows closer, it will be interesting to see if developer Rebellion reveals any other creatures that players will have to be on the lookout for. Rats and leeches are enough to make a lot of players' stomachs churn, but there may be even more in store in Atomfall's dangerous world.
