Summary
- Atomfall was a big success for developer Rebellion, becoming its fastest-selling game and reaching 2 million players weeks after launch.
- The upcoming Wicked Isle DLC will lean into Atomfall's folk horror aspects and introduce a new region, Midsummer Island.
- The DLC will also add new enemy factions, skills, weapons, rewards, and ending possibilities.
Rebellion Developments' Atomfall took a turn from the studio's long-running third-person stealth-action Sniper Elite franchise into the FPS survival RPG-lite genre. Atomfall takes place in an alternate 1960s timeline following the disaster at the real-world Windscale nuclear plant in England, veering into a much different and odder outcome than known reality, and creating a unique post-apocalyptic setting with a distinctly British flavor full of intrigue for players to unearth.
The title has resonated well with audiences since its release earlier in March of this year, with Atomfall acquiring a notable player count, reaching 2 million players within two weeks of its launch, and making it Rebellion's fastest-selling and most successful project in the studio's 30+ year history. In short order, Atomfall will receive more content, as the developer has just recently announced the upcoming Wicked Isle DLC that is ready to take fans to another part of its world, and introduce a range of new items into the mix.

Wicked Isle Promises to Build on Some of Atomfall's Best Parts
While it contains a lot of retro sci-fi elements similar to games like Fallout, Wicked Isle is stated to be leaning heavily into Atomfall's folk horror aspects as its main inspiration. The expansion will take players to a new region known as Midsummer Island. Over on the official site, Wicked Isle's description outlines what fans can expect to see and find in this mysterious new location:
Midsummer is located close to the Windscale Atom Plant, resulting in higher levels of infection in both the people and the environment there than on the mainland. You are going to meet new enemy factions, including pirate bandits and infected druids. To help you survive, there are new weapons to be found on the island, including a devastating Blunderbuss shotgun, a new bow, cutlass, daggers and the Beekeeper’s Staff. You will also be able to acquire new skills which will aid you on your quest, as well as an upgraded metal detector which will enable you to find even more loot caches.
Based on some of the footage seen in its trailer, Wicked Isle looks in many ways to embrace some of Atomfall's more supernatural and cult-like angles, similar to those seen in the Casterfall Woods map and factions. Atomfall's world is one of its main highlights, as it is full of secrets, enemies, and rewards that all encourage thorough exploration and preparation. Fans can look forward to the Wicked Isle DLC providing even more mysteries, dangerous foes, and useful loot as they are tasked with surviving Midsummer Island and unraveling the strange and likely disturbing stories that lie in wait.
