Attack on Titan is one of the greatest shonen anime of all time. Regardless of the opinions fans have regarding the ending, there's no denying that Isayama has crafted one of the most compelling tales in fiction, full of numerous plot twists that are brilliantly foreshadowed.

Attack on Titan: Ymir and Krista’s Relationship Explained

Ymir and Krista’s relationship is one of the most important in Attack on Titan. Here’s how they played a defining role in the story.

It's easy to see why fans would salivate at the opportunity of rewatching this gem. The characters are one of the many things in Attack on Titan that make it so special, with some of the people living in this twisted universe enduring horrible things in the quest to attain their goals.

Eren Jaeger

The Burden On His Shoulders After He Became The Attack Titan Was Immense

  • Biggest Tragedy: Losing his mother, only to realize later on that he may have guided Dina's Titan to his house

The Attack Titan is a heavy burden for many, but it was especially hard to bear on Eren's shoulders. Touching Historia's hand let him access a vision of the future (and the past) that traumatized him and made it clear that he was going to do something vicious.

Losing his mother is what helped Eren embark on the quest for revenge, which is why it's so hard for him to accept the fact that it might've been his own actions that led to her death. This is just one of the many things that traumatize Eren, with his journey littered by the bodies of his comrades and the many more that were trampled during the Rumbling he initiated.

Reiner Braun

Developed PTSD After Uncovering All The Lies He Was Fed As A Child

  • Biggest Tragedy: Realizing his actions on Paradis Island were wrong, leading to him developing severe mental issues

Reiner Braun is one of the greatest characters in fiction, so much so that fans consider him to be a protagonist in his own right. As a child, he was brainwashed with tales about Eldian monsters and had no problems embarking on a mission to infiltrate their ranks and acquire the stolen Titans, only for him to realize that Eldians were just humans, at the end of the day.

His mind breaks when he tries to convince Eren to leave with them, and his depression over the time he spent in Paradis Island caused him to develop suicidal tendencies. The mental anguish he went through in the series was immense, which is why it was nice to see him reunite with his allies and redeem himself during the numerous battles against Eren.

Levi Ackerman

Saw Numerous Friends And Comrades Die Time And Time Again

  • Biggest Tragedy: Losing his two closest friends on his very first mission in the Survey Corps

As one would expect from an Ackerman, Levi was a stone-cold killing machine plucked from the streets by a keen-eyed Erwin. He teamed up with his friends in a bid to escape the life of garbage that had been forced upon them in the slums, but it soon turned out that not everyone was cut out for being a Survey Corps member like Levi.

Farlan and Isabel were devoured by Titans in the very first mission, and Levi saw countless people die following this traumatic event. Each death hardened him, but Levi made it a point never to forget the sacrifices made by his comrades, no matter how hopeless it seemed.

Erwin Smith

The Leader Of The Survey Corps Has Seen Untold Tragedy

  • Biggest Tragedy: Witnessing numerous young soldiers being chomped up by Titans in Survey Corps missions time and time again

Erwin Smith is the Commander of the Survey Corps and an inspiring leader people can get behind. He's strong, brave, and never despairs in the face of overwhelming odds, but Levi understood just how much Erwin was suffering before his demise.

He would've given the power of the Colossal Titan to his Commander had it not been for the look in his eyes. Erwin had already suffered enough and deserved to die. It was time for his successors to follow in his footsteps and suffer for the people of Paradis Island.

Ymir Fritz

The Cruelty She Experienced Both Before And After Acquiring The Powers Of A Titan Was Unfathomable

Ymir Fritz in Attack on Titan (2)
  • Biggest Tragedy: Becoming a slave to King Fritz's will and staying in the Paths for centuries even after her demise

There's a reason why Isayama drew Ymir as a child in the paths. She'd been suffering from the very moment she was born, and the things that happened to her were so impossibly cruel that it's easy to see why she fell for a man as cruel as King Fritz, just because he acknowledged her Titan powers and considered her to be valuable.

It might've been to further his own ambitions, but Ymir latched on to the minutest of affection given by this King and became a slave to him even after her demise. She was suffering in the Paths for a criminally long time before Eren appeared to free her from these royal bonds and think for herself.

Grisha Jaeger

Another Person Burdened By The Attack Titan And What Its Powers Represented

  • Biggest Tragedy: Being forced by Eren to devour and kill most of the Reiss family

Grisha didn't seem like the best parent around, what with him wilfully letting Eren become the Attack Titan and forcing his child down a dark path. However, as Zeke himself saw, it wasn't Grisha's will that caused him to carry out such atrocities.

The Attack Titan's powers allowed Eren to communicate with Grisha in the past and convince him to kill the royal family and acquire the powers of the Founding Titan. It's a harrowing moment, and seeing Grisha break down was especially hard to watch. He had already been traumatized by the death of his sister and the fact that his own son sold him out to Marley, but shattering his newfound compassion and love for life to commit such a heinous act and kill children made him feel well and truly hopeless.

Gabi Braun

Yet Another Soul Trapped In The Cycle of War And Hate

  • Biggest Tragedy: Losing his friends to Eren's assault on Liberio

Gabi, among many other people in Marley, was brainwashed by stories about Eldians being monsters. This belief was further cemented when Eren attacked Liberio and killed two of her closest friends.

For her, killing Sasha was a triumph, but she eventually realized what a horrible mistake she'd made when she saw the impact the death of this beloved character had. Slowly but surely, her eyes opened to the truth, and Gabi tried her hardest to redeem herself, both in the eyes of the Eldians and fans who hated her character at first.

Ymir

Manipulated By People Into Becoming Their Idol, And Was Sold Out Later On

  • Biggest Tragedy: Being sold out by the people who put her on a pedestal, turning her into a Pure Titan for decades

The fact that Ymir's life arguably got worse after escaping her impoverished situation and becoming a deity shows just how badly the Eldians were treated in Marley. She was hailed as an idol but sold out the moment Marleyan authorities caught a whiff of this cult.

She stood up for the people who worshipped her even after being outed, and was rewarded by being stoned in public and turned into one of the many Titans that would roam Paradis Island. A stroke of luck caused her to eat Marcel and acquire the powers of the Jaw Titan, giving her a few more years to live as she befriended Christa and joined the Survey Corps.
