An indie game creator has made an Attack on Titan fan game that has online multiplayer support. The video game is based on the popular manga and anime known for its amazing action scenes as well as a deep narrative that explores socio-political themes, such as inequality, and a realistic depiction of the cycle of war. The Attack on Titan anime finale was recently released, with some considering it to have a cathartic and emotional climax.
Back when Attack on Titan first launched, fans of the series could in no way predict the twists and turns that would lead to the final arc. It was a series about a young boy, Eren Yeager, swearing to avenge the death of his mother, who was killed right in front of him. However, now that watchers of the show have had around a decade to analyze every second of every episode, some keen-eyed fans have noticed details in Attack on Titan’s very first season that foreshadow the finale. With unique details like this, it is no wonder that the franchise has captivated fans worldwide.
Recently, Swammy, the owner of Blackbox Studios, an indie game developer, posted a short video on Twitter announcing the release of a free Attack on Titan game that also features multiplayer support. The game features a lobby system where players can host a server thanks to Epic Games’ online services, as well as a variety of new faces, with some being entirely new to the world of Attack on Titan like one of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners most popular characters, Lucy.
Swammy first released an Attack on Titan title two years ago, but following several issues, such as having only Eren as the only playable character and unresponsive traversal using Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) gear, the developer decided to remake the game entirely. The result, which uses assets from another fan game by a developer called Guedin, now includes a more physics-based grappling system that replicates how the ODM gear works in the anime, as well as more fearsome enemies.
Swammy said in a YouTube video that the fan game is still in its early stages, so players should expect to run into some bugs. However, the developer went on to say that they plan to release four updates for the game, with this model also allowing them to add more content, such as new character models, periodically.
With the end of what is considered one of the best Shonen animes in the last decade, fans of the franchise who have been following the series may no doubt be experiencing a void in no longer having the characters around. However, they may find some comfort in Swammy’s Attack on Titan game while zipping around a 3D map as Eren to slay titans.
