Attack on Titan is a phenomenal series that has cemented itself as one of the greatest anime ever. The series went on to reach unprecedented levels of fame during its run. However, sadly, it reached a sad conclusion in 2023, when its final anime season aired. Since then, fans have been looking for a new series that could perhaps fill in the gap that Attack on Titan left behind. While no other series will ever be a true replacement, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 stands as a great heir to Attack on Titan.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Culling Game delivers the same feelings of dread that Attack on Titan once brought, especially closer to its end. Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 marked its grand return after 2 years of hiatus, and it is safe to say the darker undertones and the feeling of dread that Attack on Titan is known to channel well are present from the very first episode. Attack on Titan is a fan favorite series that ended over 2 years ago, but a new heir for its legacy as one of the darkest shonen series might just be here, and it's none other than Jujutsu Kaisen, created by the incredibly talented author, Gege Akutami.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 is JJK’s newest anime season, and it finally saw its release on January 8, 2026. Fans know JJK Season 3 has been teased to be even darker than the previous seasons, and that truly makes it very exciting. Given that both Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen are shonen series, many see it as a suitable replacement for Attack on Titan. To hammer that home, one only needs to look at Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, which has kick-started the series’s Culling Game Arc

The Culling Game is the first arc that fans will witness during Jujutsu Kaisen’s third anime season. This arc has long been anticipated by fans, and there are big reasons for that. The Culling Game is set to be the most intense arc in the JJK anime yet, and undoubtedly, it will be the most gruesome one as well.

The Culling Game will turn Jujutsu Kaisen into an even darker shonen series with quite a few gruesome death battles. In addition, with Gojo having been sealed last season, no one can truly be safe, and that only adds to the excitement. The feeling of dread will be intense, and even fan favorite characters won't be safe, and that's something that Attack on Titan fans know to be a familiar feeling. Since 2023, AoT fans would've missed watching their favorite characters, not knowing which moment could be their last, and JJK Season 3 will deliver a similar feeling.

On top of that, both series have characters with sinister planning and dark motivations that keep the fans on the edge of their seats. In Jujutsu Kaisen, it is Kenjaku and in Attack on Titan, fans know that a whole world of dark secrets is revealed to them after the conclusion of the third season

At the end of the day, Jujutsu Kaisen is its own story that blends action and dark themes very well, but fans who miss shonen series similar to Attack on Titan have no better series to turn to.

Will Attack on Titan Ever Return?

Attack on Titan Return

While Jujutsu Kaisen could fill in the gap left behind by Attack on Titan, it will never be a true replacement. Despite their many similarities, both series remain distinct, and fans have come to love them both for what they offer. What some fans truly want is a new Attack on Titan project.

Sadly, with the manga having concluded in 2021, this is impossible. The story of Eren and his friends is now over, and it would be hard to expand on any characters after the ending that fans saw unfold.

Perhaps, a prequel series would be a better option for Attack on Titan. After all, the series already has material that could work for a prequel anime, and that's a manga called Attack on Titan: Before the Fall. Fans have seen a similar project unfold for My Hero Academia through its own prequel manga by a different author, called MHA: Vigilantes. Attack on Titan’s prequel would attract many fans, and would undoubtedly be a huge success, regardless of how good the story is.
