Industry Focus

In my writing, I seek to illuminate people to perspectives on games they play (or might have ignored) that they wouldn't normally see.

Favorite Games

While I wouldn't consider myself the definitive scholar on any particular franchise, there are a few I consider myself a fervent fan of:

Xenoblade Chronicles: These games boast some of the most imaginative worldbuilding in the medium alongside epic narratives worthy of such landscapes. It's one of few topics that's genuinely dangerous to get me talking about, because once I start, I won't stop.

Monster Hunter: I'm what you'd call a "third-fleet hunter", meaning I got my start on the third generation of Monster Hunter titles found on Nintendo's consoles, priarily the Wii and 3DS. I might not go ALL the way back with this franchise, but it's one of the few series I can safely say I've been playing for over a decade of my life. In many ways, it's the perfect series; the game can be as challenging or relaxing as you want it to be, and that's entirely dependent on how you choose to play. This level of player choice and expression extends from how you build you character to whether or not you choose to take on the various kaiju alone, with your best freinds, or random people from another country that arte up way past their bedtime.

Tekken: Out of everythign I've listed, this is the one I have the least familiarity with. I first touched Tekken 7 in 2019, and didn't play competitively as my efforts were focused on Smash Ultimate. However, I took th eplunge with Tekken 8 last year, and learning how to get good at that game has been an absolute joy. The game is intuitive, accessible, and I'm surrounded by people that make me want to get better at it. This is the fighting game that made me proud to be part of its community.

Favorite Console

As a child: Playstation 2 - this was my first home console, giving me so many fond memories that are more valuable than any vintage game you'll find on ebay. The older I get, the more I appreciate how interesting that era of games was, along with how valuable backwards compatibility with the original playstation was fro the time.

Now: Nintendo Switch - there's a lot that can be said about how underpowered this tablet is, and how the parent company is far from perfect, but this past generation has been the best time to be a Nintendo fan. In addition to theri game design getting more and more ambitious, the third party support has allowed me to experience dozens of games I missed in the past. I could eaisly play FFX on my PS2 that I still own, but why would I? I've got it on the go!
