About Matthew Whitehurst
Matt has always critically consumed pop culture media and literature. During his undergrad he produced short films and watched the internet explode in ever-changing culture shifts. During his MFA, he studied non-linear and interactive literature, which stemmed from his love of gaming. For the last few years, Matt has been a contributing writer online when he isn't working, writing, or gaming.
Favorite Console
Aside from my priority of PC gaming and recent love of the PS5, I have to say my favorite console will always be the GameCube. This is most likely due to nostalgia, but it's portable capabilities are amazing. I also love the controllers and the Mad Catz version of them. The GameCube has some of my shamelessly favorite games like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Sonic Adventure 2, Zapper, Spyro: A New Beginning, and Ty the Tasmanian Tiger; even The Hobbit and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time saw releases on there.
Proudest Gaming Achievement
I have beaten every Souls game, minus Sekiro and Demon Souls! I started with Dark Souls 3 on the PlayStation, and after putting it down for several years, I finally found my groove and beat it along with the DLC in 2018, then Dark Souls in 2019-2020, Dark Souls 2 in 2020-2021. All this experience set me up for reaching NG+4 in Elden Ring, also getting the platinum trophy on the PS5.
Favorite Games
1. The Legend of Zelda series. All of them.
2. Pokémon. All of them, but my *absolute* favorites are Gen II & III.
3. Elden Ring -- where Dark Souls 3 almost takes the lead of the Souls games for me, Elden Ring has far more content, combat variety, and in my opinion, the most visually appealing.
4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I remember buying this game when it came out on 11-11-11. It was the first game I ended up buying again for other consoles just to feel how it played. Like Reddit says, you never stop playing Skyrim, you just take long breaks.
5. Outer Wilds. This would be my number one favorite game of all time, but unfortunately I can only experience it for the first time once. (This doesn't mean it doesn't have replayability, but what you "learn" will change how you view the game forever) If you've never played this, I cannot spoil anything further. Just know that this is the most unique and memorable game you will ever play.
