Avatar Movies Releasing On The Disney Plus Streaming Rival…

First premiering in 2009, Avatar was a masterfully done science fiction epic that employed cutting-edge visual effects to give a cinematic experience that many hadn’t so much as conceptualized before. The ensuing box office success quickly catapulted the film into the list of highest-grossing box office projects. The sequel, which started breaking records on par with Star Wars from its trailer release, also exceeded expectations at its box office, with the first film also getting a re-release to help build anticipation for its follow-up project.

While Avatar and The Way of Water director Cameron has dissed streaming on more than one occasion, his films still found their way onto the Disney Plus streaming platform for home streaming. However, a new option seems to have opened up for fans who don’t have the service. The social media page for the Warner Bros Discovery-owned streaming platform Max recently shared a summer content update for August, which revealed that the original Avatar film would be joining the platform’s library on August 17th.

Max, recently found to seemingly be removing all traces of Zack Snyder's Justice League from its library and social media, has previously secured rights to Avatar 2: The Way of Water, allowing the film to be streamed on the platform. With the addition of 2009’s Avatar, both currently available installments in what is arguably Cameron’s greatest work are now available on the Disney Plus competitor. This is likely due to allowances made before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and the rights to the IP.

The move is noteworthy, but Cameron and Disney made sure it was common knowledge that the ideal way to experience both movies was in cinemas, with the company going so far as to remove Avatar from Disney Plus while the re-release was playing in theaters. So they may see no real utility in keeping the material exclusive, as most hardcore fans would have seen the Avatar movies multiple times at the cinema already. There’s also likely some contractual clause being fulfilled with this deal.

Whatever the case is, it’s good news for fans of the Avatar franchise and Cameron, as the expanded streaming access will help more people watch the films to tide over time until the release of the next project. With Cameron promising Avatar 3 will show the dark side of the Na'vi, the expectation is that the third installment will up the ante and the action for yet another box office record-breaking bombshell and a thrilling ride for everyone watching.
