Summary

  • Fans will have to wait longer for Avengers: Doomsday, raising expectations and pressure on Marvel Studios.
  • Delay may make audiences less familiar with characters in the film, impacting overall storyline buildup.
  • The confusing multiverse rules and potential negative impact on fan experience pose a significant risk for Marvel Studios.

Over the years, Marvel Studios has built up a reputation for providing excellent organization, leading to the seemingly impossible Marvel Cinematic Universe becoming something people have taken for granted recently. However, plans caught up with them for Avengers: Doomsday, which has led to the release of the highly anticipated movie being pushed back by seven months to December 18, 2026, instead of its original May 1, 2026 date.

The decision has been made to try and ensure the quality of Avengers: Doomsday is at the level audiences would expect from a film such as this. However, the film has now been pushed outside of the summer blockbuster season, and there is a potentially significant risk that will come with that decision.

Marvel fans have been looking forward to another Avengers-level entry into the MCU from the moment that Avengers: Endgame rolled credits back in 2019. Given that it will have been seven years since the last Avengers film and Avengers: Doomsday released, there are going to be some major expectations. Now, adding a further delay is only going to increase the pressure on the Russo Brothers to deliver an unforgettable movie that holds up to what has come before, while also driving the franchise forward.

People Will Be Less Familiar With The Already-Introduced Characters In Avengers: Doomsday

The significant risk that Marvel Studios is taking with this delayed decision is the fact that people will be less familiar with the already-introduced characters. This is an Avengers film missing many of the old guard, with no Iron Man or Steve Rogers to help carry the bulk of the story. Instead, fans are being treated to the New Avengers and Fantastic Four, but by the time Avengers: Doomsday rolls around, both of those movies will be over a year old. That means a lot of people will have forgotten all the finer details of them and the characters that were introduced. This is even more problematic for older aspects of the franchise that are going to be important, such as the Disney Plus series Loki or Captain America: Brave New World. The details that have been added to these characters will be worthless in the long run because fans won't remember everything that happened, and that could negatively impact Avengers: Doomsday if things aren't re-explained within that movie, which will be impossible for all of the characters that are going to be involved.

Marvel has spent time developing many characters to make a big impact in Avengers: Doomsday and help the franchise move forward for this movie and in the long term. However, the significant gap between now and Avengers: Doomsday could mean that all of those characters will have less of an impact. The New Avengers have a lot of buzz surrounding them right now, but with such a gap, the momentum will be lost, which will hurt the movie overall, which is problematic. It's going to hurt Avengers: Doomsday and the characters beyond that point, and it's something that Marvel Studios is going to have to navigate carefully.

Avengers: Doomsday's Build-Up Has Already Been Confusing

There Is Too Many Multiverse Rules For People To Follow Along With

With or without a lengthy break, the buildup toward Avengers: Doomsday has been confusing. The multiverse phase of the MCU hasn't been handled exceptionally well, with characters appearing from nowhere without much rhyme or reason other than being from the multiverse. While that's led to some fun cameos, such as Chris Evans playing the Human Torch again, unless all of the backstory is explained in detail, there will be some confused audience members. The gap in time is going to lead to an overreliance on the audience to do homework before going to watch Avengers: Doomsday, which isn't a good thing. Fans shouldn't have to go and watch multiple movies and television shows in order to be up to speed when it comes to Avengers: Doomsday. There are a lot of rules that people have to follow in a bid to understand everything that's going to happen in this movie, and having a longer time to wait will make that even more complicated.

Even though Marvel Studios has decided to delay Avengers: Doomsday in a bid to make the movie as entertaining as possible, it could come at a cost. If it ends up negatively impacting the fan experience, then it's going to lead to the movie underperforming, which could then impact Avengers: Secret Wars because that is going to follow from this. It's a significant risk that Marvel has taken with Avengers: Doomsday, and now the decision-makers will be hoping that it all works out.
