Special Attacks are an interesting combat mechanic that can be performed in Avowed, and depending on the player's equipment choices, they can be really destructive and grant them a considerable advantage during fights.

Avowed: How Long To Beat

Players need to spend some time exploring the Living Lands if they wish to fully uncover all of Avowed mysteries.

In this guide, players will find information about Special Attacks, how many types are there, and how to trigger special combinations with Companions' skills during combat.

What Are Special Attacks In Avowed?

During combat, players can trigger a Special Attack by accumulating Stun, which is represented with a Yellow Bar below the enemy's health. Once that bar is full, players will be able to trigger a special type of empowered attack, depending on the weapon they currently have equipped in their main hand.

It is important to mention that only main-handed weapons can trigger Special Attacks, and the total amount of damage will vary depending on the weapon's quality and properties.

Some unique weapons have additional effects that can be applied to enemies or buffs triggered when performing Special Attacks.

It is also possible to combine a Special Attack with a Companion Ability if timed correctly, greatly enhancing the damage caused. Some Companions have abilities that act as 'primers' and weaken the enemy — or make their Stun bar fill up more quickly. For example: Kai's 'Fire and Ire' makes him immediately teleport to the selected target and shoot a powerful blast that makes the Stun bar rise considerably.

Special Attack Weapon Differences In Avowed

Different kinds of weapons have their own unique Special Attack animations, and certain Weapons like Daggers and Swords have faster Special Attack animations. The faster the animation is, the more probable it is to be able to connect more combo attacks, dodge, or Parry after the enemy counters.

Bigger weapons like the Warhammers or Greatswords have slower Special Attack animations but cause more damage. This also means that there's a big window of opportunity for faster enemies to surround the players while they perform this kind of 'finisher move.'

Players should learn to take advantage of each of their weapon's properties, the special effects of their Enchantments, and the Companions' abilities to maximize damage when performing Special Attacks.

Upgraded weapons cause more Stun, enabling players to perform Special Attacks more often, and that translates into extra damage.

Investing in upgrading weapons or purchasing better quality ones is a must — moreso if players have in mind that stronger enemies will require better gear for players to be able to cause real damage to them.
