Maces were one of the most important weapons in an army because of their bludgeoning power. When they were used in close combat, they could break the chain mail or body armor of the opposing fighting force. They could also break doors and walls along with smashing enemies, and their historic use echoes in the RPGs where they also appear as a weapon class.
When it comes to Baldur’s Gate 3, the game blesses the players with interesting and useful choices for maces. The game offers a good selection of ways to deal with those annoying enemies, barriers, or locked chests.
Updated on January 12, 2024, by Kristy Ambrose: As players continue to explore every last corner of Baldur's Gate 3, a process that seems to be neverending, they discover more distinct and unique maces. These can sometimes include weapons that can pass as flails or morningstars, niche weapons that can also be placed in the same category. Some of them are crafted or bought as opposed to being found in a hoard or dropped from slain enemies, and you only find them by making certain friends, chance finds of molds and materials, or keeping random items.
Baldur's Gate 3: The 10 Legendary Actions That Deal The Most Damage
Legendary Actions introduce new challenges in Baldur's Gate 3. Some add difficulty in indirect ways, but others just dole out massive damage.
8 Xyanyde
Dropped By Minthara In The Shattered Sanctum
-
1D6 damage, Concussive Smash, ability to use
Faerie Fire
The
Xyanyde is an uncommon mace that comes with standard stats. Like all other maces, it deals 1d6 damage and features the Concussive Smash action: after the wielder hits an enemy, the wielder can daze said enemy once per short rest. This weapon's distinctive feature, however, is its ability.
Xyanyde’s Fire can be used to encase the wielder Faerie Fire once per short rest if they miss an attack. This makes the target a beacon of light, and any attack that rolls against the said enemy will have Advantage. The problem is that it does not work all the time; rather, it seems to work more like 40% of the time.
7 Loviatar’s Scourge
Drops From Abdirak, The Cleric Of Loviatar In The Shattered Sanctum
- 1D6 damage, Concussive Smash, 1d6 Necrotic damage, grants the wielder resistance to Necrotic damage but also causes the Willing Whip condition
Another uncommon mace, Loviatar’s Scourge has a few things going for it. Even though the stats are standard, Loviatar’s Scourge offers an additional +1d6 Necrotic damage, while also making the wielder resistant to Necrotic damage. This makes the weapon an absolute beast in specific scenarios.
Baldur's Gate 3: How To Get The Loviatar's Love Buff (& How It Works)
Here is how to unlock the Loviatar's Love buff in Larian's Baldur's Gate 3.
One such example would be a paladin wielding it. If a paladin uses smite, the necrotic damage is applied twice. The caveat lies in the fact that during attacks, the wielder is also targeted by necrotic damage, explaining the name of the associated ability, Willing Whip.
6 The Adamantine Mace
Crafted At The Adamantine Forge
- 1D6+1 damage, Concussive Smash, the melee abilities of Diamondsbane Lethal Weapon
Some of the molds for the Adamantine Forge are more difficult to find than others, and it's worth exploring Grymforge and the surrounding ruins to find all of them. Use the Forge to craft a mace of rare quality that has some impressive abilities, especially for a Cleric or Fighter with a melee build.
Diamondsbane ensures that every single hit landed with this weapon is a critical one, and Lethal Weapon means that this mace ignores resistance to bludgeoning damage. It's not just great for enemies but structures or statues that would normally require explosive power to destroy.
5 Shattered Flail
Dropped By Flind On The Risen Road
- 1D6+2 damage, Concussive Smash, 1d6 Acid damage, the Yeenogu's Gift affect
If the beauty of the weapon is of no import, the benefits that players get with the
Shattered Flail are quite intriguing. First and foremost, it has a +2 weapon enchantment, but it also comes with a very interesting ability attached to it called Yeenoghu's Gift.
Baldur's Gate 3: Best Rapiers, Ranked
Rapiers are one of the many one-handed weapon options players have in Baldur's Gate 3, and these are the strongest in this archetype.
Yeenoghu’s Gift heals the wielder by 1d6 each time the wielder deals damage. The flip side of this benefit is the weapon can cause madness if the player does not attack during a turn when the buff is applied.
4 Handmaiden’s Mace
Dropped By Viconia In The House Of Grief
- 1D6+2 damage, Concussive Smash, 1d6 poison damage, increases Strength to 18
This mace might be the best one in the game due to its stats. It's a very rare weapon but it doesn't offer an amazing magical ability, but it has a +2 weapon enchantment, meaning it deals 1d6+2 damage. It also does +1d6 poison damage. Still, some players might consider these features situational.
However, it also increases the wielder's strength stat up to 18. If Strength is a dump stat for the character, this might just be the thing to counter it. The Handmaiden’s Mace is dropped by Viconia during the Daughter of Darkness quest in the House of Grief, located in the Lower City part of Baldur’s Gate.
3 Devotee’s Mace
Chosen By Clerics At Level 10 With “Divine Intervention: Arm Thy Servant”
- 1D6+3 damage, Concussive Smash, 1D8 Radiant damage, grants the mass-healing ability Healing Incense Aura
This legendary piece of equipment has the much-coveted +3 weapon enchantment, and if that wasn’t enough, it also deals an additional 1d8 radiant damage. The special ability attached to the weapon is Healing Incense Aura, which heals the wielder and any allies within the 9-meter range for 1d4, at the start of the wielder’s turn. This aura is activated using a bonus action.
Baldur's Gate 3: Best Amulets You Can Get In Act 3, Ranked
Here are the best Amulets from Act 3 in Baldur's Gate, ranked from worst to best.
All of this goodness, sadly, comes with limitations. One is that it only works when the weapon is equipped in the main hand slot, and the second is the way it is obtained. The player has to reach level 10 with a cleric and pick “Divine Intervention: Arm Thy Servant.” This also means it is an end-game weapon only.
2 Twist Of Fortune
Dropped By Gerringothe Thorm In The Toll House
- 1D8+1 damage, Concussive Smash, the abilities Twist of Fortune and Blood Money, and Tenacity if it's equipped as the main hand weapon
No matter how you defeat Gerringothe Thorm, whether it's talking her down or fighting her the old-fashioned way, she drops this morning star. Its base stats are only marginally better than normal, but the mace grants two abilities called Twist of Fortune and Blood Money that are so useful that players use them as exploits.
Twist of Fortune allows the wielder to reroll anything lower than a two on hit, and Blood Money does extra damage for every 300 gold in the target's inventory. Players have discovered the latter ability can be used to destroy any character that has a lot of money, and if it's possible to reverse-pickpocket an enemy, then you can load them up with gold and destroy them in one hit using this mace.
1 The Blood of Lathander
Hidden Beneath The Githyanki Creche
- 1D6+3 damage, Concussive Smash, the healing ability Lathlander's Blessing, the benefit of Lathalnder's Light, and the ability to cast Sunbeam
If there ever was a piece of equipment that could be called overpowered, it would be
The Blood of Lathander. If the +3 weapon enchantment seems far too little, this mace has it covered by offering an additional strength modifier for the damage.
In addition to this already powerful enhancement, it also has “Lathander’s Blessing” which heals the wielder for 2–12 points and heals party members within 9 meters for 1–6 points, once per long rest. Players also get “Lathander's Light” which sheds holy light in a 20-foot radius. In combat, any fiends and undead standing in the light must succeed on a Constitution saving throw, or else this light renders them Blind. Finally, the mace also features the Level 6 Evocation spell “Sunbeam.”
