Starfinder: Afterlight's crew of spacefaring companions welcomes a new member: Preach, an insectoid Shirren mystic who protects an utterly adorable larva. Preach is voiced by award-winning actor, director, and performance capture artist Neil Newbon. Newbon previously announced that he is serving as the voice director for Starfinder: Afterlight. Since that announcement, fans have been eager to know if he would lend his iconic voice to the project, and now they have their answer.
Neil Newbon Joins the Starfinder: Afterlight Cast As Preach The Shirren Mystic
In a conversation with The Best War Games, Newbon revealed that it took "very little persuasion" from Epictellers Entertainment for him to step into the Starfinder: Afterlight role. Preach joins the previously revealed crew of Kole Stryker (Fred Tatasciore), Tycho (Inel Tomlinson), Lu-323 (Melissa Medina), and Sterling (James Alexander), who team up to search for the missing Captain Khali (Carolina Ravassa).
- Name: Preach (and the Golden One)
- Class: Mystic
- Ancestry: Shirren
- Goal: To become a High Priest of his people, to protect the Golden One
Newbon described Preach as "a little bookish" and very dedicated to his role as the "guardian of the Golden One," a larva who is prophesied to bring miracles to his people. He felt that Preach serves as the "father" of the crew of Starfinder: Afterlight companions, a counterpart to Captain Khali's "mother" role. Newbon went so far as to dub his character "Bug Daddy" and "Daddy Preach," nicknames that may find their place among Starfinder: Afterlight's fans.
Preach is quite different from Baldur's Gate 3's Astarion, but the actor hinted that Preach might have something in store for romantic hopefuls: "Hey, insects can be hot. I'm just saying. Like, a praying mantis, man. Look at them." It's worth noting that romance is confirmed for Starfinder: Afterlight and The Best War Games can confirm that Preach is romanceable. Ravassa added that, due to Newbon's talent, she felt Preach would be a character fans would find attractive regardless of his appearance:
"You know, Neil's so talented that he's going to make this insectoid sexy. Even with a weird voice or whatever else happens, it's going to be sexy."
Starfinder: Afterlight players interested in getting to know Preach and the rest of the game's companions early can back the game's Kickstarter, which remains open through November 6. The game is currently scheduled to launch in Early Access sometime in 2026, with more character and actor reveals planned in the future.
