There are a variety of ways to give your character an advantage or a "buff" as they explore Sword Coast in Baldur's Gate 3. These are granted through scrolls, spells, or certain encounters with specific NPCs scattered throughout the game's world.

If your character lost most of their health and stamina, you probably need to learn how to cure Flesh Rot in Baldur’s Gate 3 to help him out.

Some buffs are hard to find as they can be locked behind certain dialogue choices, special items, and areas the player can only visit once and for a limited time. The Githzerai Mind Buff is one of the latter. It's hidden behind a puzzle and a secret door at the end of Act 2 in Baldur's Gate 3.

According to Dungeons & Dragons lore, the Githzerai are an offshoot of the Githyanki, and although the two races are closely related, they're estranged. Lae'zel mentions them once in a while and describes them as those who decided to embrace their psychic powers and become magic users.

This is the first fight with Ketheric Thorm, and to open the way into the Illithid Colony below, he must be defeated. Once he retreats, a cutscene will follow that showcases a giant tentacle bursting out of one of the turrets and seizing Dame Aylin before receding into the depths.

At this point, your character can follow him below into the Illithid Colony.

  • Stay to the Left. Turn south until you reach a large room with one other exit to the west. Prepare to fight many zombies, demons, and a Death Shepherd to clear the room.
  • The Brain-Mapping Puzzle: This is located on the southernmost side of the room. Two short jumps are required to reach the small alcove. It's better to go here first.
  • The Mind-Archive Interface: On a small rock shelf, players can jump away from the main area to the west of the Brain-Mapping Puzzle.

Solve The Brain Puzzle

The brain puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3.

This is a fairly easy Baldur''s Gate 3 puzzle, and the colors and audio cues can help you solve it. Once that's done, a door at the far end of the room will open. It contains several items of interest, including the item you need to get the Githzerai Mind Buff.

  • The Blade of Oppressed Souls : A Rare longsword that grants the wielder Crowning Strike, an extra ability that can afflict the target with the Crown of Madness spell.
  • Braindrain Gloves : When you're wearing these gloves, any psychic damage you deal to a target also results in the Mental Fatigue condition.
  • Circlet of Mental Anguish : A headpiece of Rare quality that heals the wearer for a small amount when a spell target fails a Wisdom, Charisma, or Intelligence saving throw.
  • Waking Mind. This is the Githzerai brain that gives you the buff. Put it in your inventory and go to the Mind Archive Interface.

Click on the elaborate stone mural on the far wall of this room to get an interesting bit of Illithid lore and history.

Use The Waking Mind At The Mind-Archive Interface

There are minds in jars that you can find throughout the game that can be used here. There are two in the Illithid ship that serves as a prologue to Act 1, and those also work here. There are several scattered throughout this colony as well, but to get the buff, you must use the Waking Mind.

  • Activate the Mind-Archive Interface. Like the other heads, you can speak to this one, but only the Waking Mind understands what's happening. She'll describe how she ended up in the colony and how she, a betrayer herself, was eventually betrayed.
  • Go Through the Dialogue Options. She'll make you a deal; if you purge her mind and give her peace, she'll grant you the Githzerai Mind Buff. This gives your character a permanent Advantage on Intelligence saving throws.
  • Choose to Reach Out and Purge or Consume her Mind. There are two choices here and both will have the same effect of granting your character the buff.
