Unlike Dungeons & Dragons, where players have to add everything up themselves, Baldur's Gate 3 thankfully works out all dice rolls and damage in combat. This makes the game much easier to get into. However, for those who want to push the boundaries and become a pro at BG3 combat, they will need to first learn how everything works under the hood. This is especially true when playing on Honour mode.

Baldur's Gate 3: Crossplay Explained (How To Play With Friends On Other Platforms)

Crossplay in Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally here! Learn how to team up with friends across platforms and set up multiplayer lobbies with mods.

One of the most important concepts to understand is Attack Rolls, as these determine whether attacks hit. When players hover over a target, they will see the percentage of the chance of hitting. This is determined by the target's Armor Class (AC) and the attacker's modifiers, which can be increased.

How Do Attack Rolls Work In Baldur's Gate 3?

When a character attacks in BG3, they roll a d20 against a target's Armor Class. If the Attack Roll is equal to or higher than the AC, the attack is successful.

For example, an Attack Roll of 18 would beat an AC of 15. Anything below 15 would count as a miss.

How Do Attack Rolls Exceed 20+?

As Armor Class values can often exceed 20, there are thankfully a few ways to overcome these.

  • Rolling a natural 20 results in a Critical Hit, guaranteeing the attack to land, no matter the AC.
  • Characters add a variety of modifiers to their Attack Rolls.

There are passives and items to lower the threshold for Crits to 19 or even lower.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Subclasses, Ranked

Every class in Baldur's Gate 3 has a variety of subclass choices, and these are the best options players can choose.

  • Proficiency: If a character is proficient with their weapon, they will add +2, +3, or +4 to their Attack Roll. These latter two bonuses are gained at Level 5 and Level 9.
  • Ability Modifier: Weapons have Strength or Dexterity bonuses, which use the wielder's Ability Modifier. A character with 14 Strength will add +2 to their Attack Roll if the weapon uses Strength.
  • Class Features: Some classes or subclasses have effects or passives to increase Attack Rolls. Bards can use Bardic Inspiration to grant a 1d6 bonus to the next attack, and Fighters or Rangers can take Archery to gain +2 on ranged attacks.
  • Weapons: If a weapon has a Weapon Enchantment of +1, +2, or +3, it is added to Attack Rolls as well as buffing damage.
  • Items: Some items grant Attack Roll bonuses, but sometimes only against certain targets. Gauntlets of Surging Accuracy grants 1d4, while Mask of Soul Perception grants a flat +2 bonus.
  • Spells: Bless grants a 1d4 bonus, while Magic Weapon can grant +1 or more if cast at higher levels.
  • Consumables: Oil of Accuracy grants +2, Diluted Oil of Sharpness +1 each for 10 turns. Elixir of Heroism adds 1d4 to all Attack Rolls until Long Rest.
  • Conditions: A few conditions can help. Bliss Spores grants 1d6, and when Astarion is Happy after feeding, he gains +1 to Attack Rolls.

With just some of these taken into account, players may end up with an example Attack Roll of 16, +2 from Proficiency, +2 Strength modifier, +2 Weapon Enchantment to equal 22 in total, and hit an AC of 22.
