Baldur's Gate 3 has received a nomination in The Game Awards 2025, but it seems to have baffled the developers more than anything else. Game press organizations vote to determine the nominees for the year in The Game Awards, but with Baldur's Gate 3 having launched in 2023, it seems this nomination was totally unexpected.
To say that Baldur's Gate 3 was a success for Larian Studios would be a major understatement. Though there were 23 years separating Baldur's Gate 2 and Baldur's Gate 3, plus Larian Studios picking up the reins from where Bioware left off, the game nonetheless sold over 15 million copies and saw dozens of game award nominations and a significant number of wins. With Larian moving on and the game's development having come to a close, the developers likely expected that would be the end of it, but that's not the case.
Rumor: Baldur's Gate 3 Could Be Coming to an Unexpected Platform
A new rumor suggests that Larian's RPG Baldur's Gate 3 could be coming to an unexpected platform.
Baldur's Gate 3 Devs Bewildered By Another Game Award Nomination
When The Game Awards announced the nominees for its 2025 ceremony, Larian Studios made one more appearance, with Baldur's Gate 3 receiving a single nomination for Best Community Support. In response, the official Baldur's Gate 3 Twitter account tweeted a professional message of gratitude, but it was quickly followed by a humorous response from the Larian Studios account, simply stating "honestly, what the [expletive] thanks guys." Though they were published in that order, it seems likely that the Larian Studios tweet was the team's initial response to the news, with the polished response being something they came up with later.
The shock from the team isn't entirely unfounded. The CEO of Larian previously noted that the team felt that it couldn't fully move on with closure while the awards kept flowing in, only to receive another award after the fact in 2024. 2025 has largely been quiet with regard to Baldur's Gate 3 accolades, only for this new nomination to come through at the end of the year. However, to be fair, it wasn't until April 2025 that Larian released the last major patch for the game, which also ended up being one of the biggest ones. The game also received some fine-tuning in the form of Steam Deck compatibility in September, plus some additional hotfixes.
Whether Baldur's Gate 3 can take home the award this year remains to be seen, however. The game is up against other giants in the industry, competing with Final Fantasy 14, Fortnite, Helldivers 2, and No Man's Sky. With the exception of Helldivers 2, which launched in 2024, the remaining nominees came out years ago, and are still being celebrated. No Man's Sky and Baldur's Gate 3 are the only games on the list that lack microtransactions or paid DLC. While No Man's Sky has been supported for far longer than Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios ' game was already a major success at its launch, while No Man's Sky was received as a large disappointment. No Man's Sky has gone on to completely turn the trajectory of the game around and has a greatly improved perception in the public eye now, whereas Baldur's Gate 3 largely added new content and fine-tuned what was already there.
In any case, players won't have to wait long to learn if Baldur's Gate 3 can take home yet another crown. The Game Awards will air on December 11, which, as usual, also promises lots of exciting reveals and announcements. Even if Baldur's Gate 3 fails to secure one more award, fans of the game may want to keep an eye on the Best Performance category. Jennifer English, the actress who portrayed Shadowheart in BG3, is up for an award for her recent performance in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
