In Baldur's Gate 3, there are several tasks that feature multiple possible paths to a conclusion. Discovering and investigating the House of Grief is one such task. In the later stages of the game, players can find themselves with more than one quest that tasks them with locating the House of Grief, with Shadowheart's questline being the most obvious. However, players who are not following Shadowheart's quest can also encounter a completely separate side-quest that tasks them with investigating the House of Grief. Completing one or both of these quests can prove tricky, as BG3 offers players very little to go on. With this in mind, this guide will show players how to locate and investigate the House of Grief in Baldur's Gate 3.

Where to Find the House of Grief in Baldur's Gate 3

BG3-House-Grief-Map

The House of Grief is found in the northwest corner of Baldur's Gate. From the Baldur's Gate Waypoint, look for Lady Jannath's Estate, which is shown on the above map. It is far more likely that players have revealed this location than the House of Grief. From the estate, you'll need to head north into a small courtyard, where you'll find Arves, and the House of Grief.

How to Start the House of Grief Quests in Baldur's Gate 3

As previously mentioned, there are two quests that task the player with reaching the House of Grief in BG3. The first is Shadowheart's main quest. Over the course of the game, players who follow her questline will realize that many of Shadowheart's memories have been stripped from her, leaving her in a perpetual state of uncertainty and confusion. At first, she hides this fact behind a guise of piety and confidence that makes the player think she is simply a devout follower of Shar. As events unfold, however, cracks in the facade begin to show. Regardless of the path players take with Shadowheart, by the time they reach the city of Baldur's Gate, visiting the House of Grief will be required.

If players avoid following Shadowheart's quest entirely, there is another quest that will require a visit to the House of Grief. Like Shadowheart's quest into the house, this too requires players to make their way to Baldur's Gate. In the northwest corner of the city map, you'll find Lady Jannath's estate. Just past this location, players will find an older man named Arves. He has completely lost his memory, and after talking to him, the game prompts the player to "Investigate the House of Grief." However, what this actually entails is not made clear.

It is important to note that, for the most part, Shadowheart will be required to actually see this quest through to completion. Knowing Larian, there is likely a path to completing the side-quest without Shadowheart. However, the fact that she is tied to the location, makes it far easier to simply take her.

How to Investigate the House of Grief

BG3-House-Grief-Mirie

When you reach Arves, you'll actually be right next to the House of Grief. If you enter with Shadowheart, and speak to Mirie at the front desk, you'll be ushered into the back without much fuss. But if you enter without Shadowheart, you'll need to pay 1000 gold to enter the backroom.

Once you enter the back room, sit on the granite bench that sits directly in the center. Doing this will cause the Mother Superior, Viconia DeVir, to appear. Again, it is much faster to complete this task if Shadowheart is with you. If she is not present, you'll have to return with her to enter the cloister. If you head into the corner of the room, an investigation check occurs, which appears to reveal the hidden switch that opens the chamber. This makes it possible to enter without Shadowheart. However, it is a difficult check to pass, and is not required at all if Shadowheart is with you.

When you reach the cloister's main chamber, and speak with the Mother Superior, Investigate the House of Grief will be completed. There does not seem to be any resolution to Arves' situation.

Completing Shadowheart's Quest at the House of Grief

BG3-House-Grief-Defeat-Viconia

Shadowheart's goal at the House of Grief is to find her parents, and this is only possible through a fight. If Shadowheart decides to defy Shar, you will have to fight every Sharran in the building. There are several possible outcomes for Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3, but defeating the Mother Superior and the rest of the Sharrans, as well as deciding what to do with her parents, will conclude her time at the House of Grief for all intents and purposes.
