Baldur's Gate 3 is perhaps one of the most content-rich RPGs ever made. Despite being released over two years ago, it is still one of the only games in recent memory that really knows how to reward players for their curiosity. Virtually every nook and cranny in Baldur's Gate 3's world has some kind of hidden content that players may miss, whether that be a side quest, an Easter egg, a cutscene, or an optional bit of dialogue. While the game may not exactly be open world, it arguably feels more open and expansive than most of the titles in the genre.
In the months since its launch, players have combed through the entirety of Baldur's Gate 3 and found some secrets hidden within the game. Not only have they discovered various references to franchises like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dragon Age, and Final Fantasy, they've also found some hidden features that can be very useful in the game. These include permanent upgrades that can only be unlocked when talking to specific characters and even hidden areas that are filled with valuable loot. In spite of the efforts players have made in unraveling all the secrets that Baldur's Gate 3 has to offer, though, there is at least one Easter egg in the game that won't be discovered anytime soon.
Larian Has Hidden Some Clues About Its Next Game Within Baldur's Gate 3
Back in 2024, the head of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, revealed in an interview with Future Games Show that Baldur's Gate 3 contained an Easter egg that provided some hints about Larian's next big project. A writer at Larian apparently told Vincke about the existence of this Easter egg a short while ago and, according to him, it had not been discovered by the gaming community at the time that this interview was held. Even though months have passed since then, this mystery still continues to this day.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 Had Some Easter Eggs Hinting at Baldur's Gate 3's Existence
While it may be surprising to learn that Larian has hidden some clues about its next game somewhere within Baldur's Gate 3, this is not the first time that the company has done something like this. As Swen Vincke himself pointed out last year, Larian secretly placed some Easter eggs referencing Baldur's Gate 3 in the previous game it made, Divinity: Original Sin 2, way before BG3 had even been revealed. These obscure Easter eggs in Divinity: Original Sin 2 were apparently not found until after Baldur's Gate 3 was announced.
One of the items that players can obtain in Divinity: Original Sin 2 is called the Jar of Mind Maggots. These maggots, as some players may realize, sound suspiciously similar to the mind flayer tadpoles that play a big role in the story of Baldur's Gate 3. Interestingly, the mind flayers are also briefly referenced by the scholar Tarquin in Divinity: Original Sin 2. During his final dialogue sequence, Tarquin mentions something about a "mysterious race from another world" that feeds on minds, and he talks about how he wants to seek them out by finding a portal to their realm. Larian referenced this Easter egg in Baldur's Gate 3 by implicitly mentioning Tarquin at least twice in notes lying around the game's world.
Baldur's Gate 3 was developed under the working title Project Gustav, which is a reference to the Gustavchen language that Tarquin briefly mentions at the end of Divinity: Original Sin 2.
Very Little Information is Known About Larian's Next Projects
Although it's nice that Baldur's Gate 3 contains some clues about Larian's next game, it's pretty much impossible to determine what these are at the moment, given that the company has revealed virtually nothing about the projects that it's working on. Larian Studios is currently developing two games, and the only piece of information it has shared about these titles is that neither of them are going to be Baldur's Gate 4. The next game from Larian Studios probably won't be released until 2028 or later, so fans will likely have to wait until it is officially announced to get a good grasp on what these mysterious Baldur's Gate 3 Easter eggs are.
