The next major patch for Baldur's Gate 3 will land in September, and an official modding toolkit will be added for the game. The Baldur's Gate 3 modding community is already having a blast, but Larian's official toolkit will make mods more stable and automatically compatible with future updates.

Since its official release, Larian has been rolling out robust updates for Baldur's Gate 3. These patches have already introduced an epilogue to the game and new romance content. In April, Larian announced Baldur's Gate 3 Patch #7, giving players a sneak peek at what to expect. Among the additions are new evil endings for both traditional characters and Dark Urge campaigns, a plethora of technical fixes, and the addition of the official modding toolkit for Baldur's Gate 3.

In an official Steam post, Larian explained how Baldur's Gate 3' s official modding toolkit will work and how it differs from the current modding community. First and foremost, the studio highlights the stability and compatibility that official mods will have compared to community mods. Larian assured that it would never block community-made mods for Baldur's Gate 3 outside its official pipeline, but if players use mods from Mod.io, the studio will ensure smooth gameplay across all platforms one can find the RPG on.

Baldur's Gate 3 Official Modding Toolkit Arrives on September

Currently, Larian is inviting some renowned mod authors to test the official modding toolkit to experiment with the new environment, transport their mods, and provide feedback to continue improving the tool. The goal is to make the modding toolkit available for all platforms, including PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox. A slight caveat, though, is that the official toolkit will have certain guidelines to respect both the Dungeons & Dragons IP and the game's own to maintain the integrity of the universe. But this only applies to narrative and script-heavy modifications, so expect to still see the Buster Sword in Baldur's Gate 3.

Larian continues to deliver on its promises to the Baldur's Gate 3 community. One of the biggest advantages of having official mod support is that, as the studio itself said, players can put into the game what they feel is missing, such as new classes, weapons, spells, and skins. Since Larian is not working on DLC for the game, perhaps it's up to the modding community to craft their own Baldur's Gate 3 expansion.

Baldur's Gate 3 will certainly have longevity with the introduction of the official modding toolkit. Larian Studios has already stated that it will not be responsible for producing a hypothetical Baldur's Gate 4 and that it is currently working on two new ambitious RPGs. To achieve this, Larian has opened a new studio in Warsaw, Poland, to assist in this latest endeavor.
